Do your own thing?[edit]

Well, yes, Karel Čapek meant it literally - the "thing" is "the paper on which is written in Greek the secret of eternal life" (Lord Harewood in Kobbé, 1987). Harewood also says that Charles Mackerras regarded "The Makropulos Secret" as a more accurate and more suggestive translation than "Affair" or "Case".
