London Cast CD?

Does this really exist? The only "London cast" CD I know of is by "London Theatre Orchestra and Cast" and is clearly not the original stage production. Blue Phoenix 15:04, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

1997/1999

The year on the Tony awards listed in the article has been changed back and forth a couple of times already. Okay, we know the show opened in 1997, and won Tony Awards at the ceremony held in 1997 covering shows that opened in 1997, so would that be the 1997 Tony Awards or the 1998 Tony Awards? --Mwalimu59 20:58, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

It would be 1996.

The Lion King opened after the 1997 Tony Awards any awards it recieved would of been in the 1998 Tony Awards.

Tony Awards This Year?

Hey peoples. Has anyone heard anything about the Tony Awards this year? Will someone please respond and answer.TnxMeldshal42 12:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Meldshal42

Look, I saw him as the Grinch in How The Grinch Stole Christmas(sorry I can't put a link to the musical's Wikipage). and he's a really good actor. I'm trying to get tickets to see him as Scar because he just got back. I really hope he's still Scar when I get tickets.Meldshal42 12:44, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Meldshal42

Michael Curry

Why is there no mention of Michael Curry? He co-designed the puppets and masks for this show, and his shop is where they were made. Sporkins 17:21, 14 January 2007 (UTC)sporkins

Why don't you add him? And if he doesn't have a Wikipedia page, then make onew for him.

Hey! I already checked and the Micheal Curry we're talking about doesn't have a Wikipedia page. Somebody make one for him. = Starting Page For Michael Curry

Ok, I'm sorry to say that I had to change my page to "Michael Curry (Puppet Designer)". Please tell me this is enough because I already got in trouble cause I named it Actor instead of Puppet Designer. Don't Give Me GRIEF!Meldshal42 22:13, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Meldshal42

Rafiki's gender

Noting that there have been multiple reverts on the gender pronouns referring to Rafiki, what is correct? In the movie both the character and the voice actor are clearly male, but in the stage version, Rafiki is played by a female (Tsidii Le Loka in the original cast). One might ask if Rafiki still played by a female in the current productions, but then that's probably irrelevant since the article should reflect the gender of the character (regardless of the gender of the performer). So what is Rafiki's gender in the stage musical? (And don't assume that performer gender automatically implies character gender; Bart Simpson's voice actor of many years has been a she.) --Mwalimu59 15:17, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Rafiki is a woman. Remeber the scene in the movie where Rafiki says, "You follow old Rafiki, he knows the way." I the musical, she says "You follow old Rafiki, she knows the way." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.242.131.151 (talk) 20:31, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's ever actually mentioned in the show. I'm trying to think if it's alluded to at one point, but, frankly, at some point in the second act I lost interest in this travesty of theatre and stopped paying attention. —  MusicMaker 04:59, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Rafiki is a female in the stage production. It was Julie Taymor's decision, as she felt there wasn't a strong, central female character. Over all I think this article could benefit from some article pertaining to how the Musical came to be, where this and many other interesting topics could be covered. I Just Kissed Al Pacino August 23 2007 —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 21:59, August 23, 2007 (UTC).

Peter Pan is usually played by a girl, should we change his gender too -_- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.118.144.236 (talk) 00:40, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Not quite the same. Peter Pan the character is still considered male, whereas in The Lion King musical, Rafiki the character was made female. --Mwalimu59 (talk) 18:11, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree with the unsigned comments, they do say 'She' in the musical. Having had a dig around the Disney website refers to Rafiki as a she at the following page http://www2.disney.co.uk/MusicalTheatre/TheLionKing/abouttheshow/story-actone.html This should clear that one up! Trivia Section

Any thoughts on rearranging some of these bits.

  • The Urban Legend might fit better in the synopsis of the scenes.
  • The Simpsons - Is there any relevance in this?
  • Robbins - Perhaps better in the US & international productions at the top.
  • Wright - As with Robbins.....

Thoughts please..... Lukeyboyuk (talk) 03:20, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Just over a month on and no thoughts..... Lukeyboyuk (talk) 17:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

For "The Simpsons" - as I remember, there is a scene (but don't ask me which episode) where the whole family is watching a musical by Itchy and Scratchy - where they're playing a song called "circle of knifes" - a good reference to "circle of life" - with nearly the same sort of screenplay (puppets held high by "hidden" actors). -- ReneRomann (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Minor vandalism

An anonymous IP has changed the opening date of the show at the Orpheum Theatre, Minneapolis from the correct date of July 31, 1997 to the incorrect date of November 13. I used rollback once, I am about to again, but I am also aware of WP:EDITWAR and WP:3RR, so I am also leaving a few references for the July 31 date:

  • USA TODAY, July 28, 1997, Monday, FINAL EDITION "'Lion King' leaps to theater's cutting edge Disney show will be a different Broadway animal", BYLINE: David Patrick Stearns, SECTION: LIFE; Pg. 1D

JeanColumbia (talk) 18:26, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok a quick look at lionking.org tells me that July 8 was the correct start date. I will research it a little further but I have always found lionking.org to be reliable. (http://www.lionking.org/musical/) Lukeyboyuk (talk) 22:40, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

"More than 40 performers will populate the stage and hundreds have labored behind the scenes to put together the world premiere theatrical production of Disney's "The Lion King," which formally opens Thursday, after three weeks of previews, at the Historic Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Here's a cross section of the talent involved in the show, which plays Minneapolis until Aug. 31 in its only pre-Broadway engagement." Source: Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), July 27, 1997, Metro Edition "Here's the Lionup;A who's-who glimpse of the artists transforming Disney's animated movie "The Lion King" into the Broadway-bound musical."BYLINE: Mike Steele; Staff Writer, SECTION: Entertainment; Pg. 1F
3 weeks of previews, which would put start date at approximately July 8, 1997. Good enough for me. Thanks, Lukeyboyuk, for joining in. Should we specify that was the start of previews, or does that really matter at this point? (My emphasis in the quote above) JeanColumbia (talk) 23:03, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I think perhaps mentioning the difference would be fine, it is after factual..... Lukeyboyuk (talk) 20:08, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Recorded productions

March 13, 2011 I deleted the statement that "The Lion King [Original Broadway Cast Recording] is a cast recording released on 1997 by The Walt Disney Company, File:A soundtrack to the musical." Live theatre does not use prerecorded "soundtracks" and the term, when applied to a recording refers to a movie version. With Lion King, the "soundtrack" is the recording from the original film. The various recordings of stage productions should be referred to as "cast recordings."

Lately there has been a lot of IP action in this article with the editor(s) adding various productions to the Recordings section which may or may not have taken place or be scheduled to take place. I've reverted these additions to be on the safe side (see here and here), but I'm slightly worried that some of the information could have been legitimate. If anyone out there who happens to be more familiar with the show would like to review the IP additions that I reverted and add back any "good" edits that might exist, it would be much appreciated. —MearsMan talk 14:13, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, this section is subject to occasional vandalsm, in the last few months by IP 68.3.202.144. (Geolocate for this IP shows Mesa Arizona; coincidentally (?) the IP refered to in the above note also shows Mesa Arizona.) I deleted obvious prank additions, plus unsourced additions. I have been able to verify the remaining recordings through amazon.com. For future reference, I'll refer to this discussion. JeanColumbia (talk) 13:06, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
IP 68.3.202.144 has again vandalised the article, but today has branched out with some minor, some major (Theatre World winner changed, non-existent productions added) vandalisms, all of which have been deleted. Again, this is for the record, all of the IP's edits are easily seen to be false per IBDB. JeanColumbia (talk) 21:09, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Spanish?

I read in the article's page that it would have a 2009 production in Spain, but I haven't found info to that in all sites, including BroadwayWorld.com. So, it is not official.

Sorry, but now I see it's official.

Vandalism by IP 68.3.202.144

I am using rollback to remove all of IP 68.3.202.144 vandal edits. This note is for the record. This IP has been a pretty consistent vandal (as can be seen from his/her talk page & edit history. JeanColumbia (talk) 22:22, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Shakespeare adaptation?

Is it too much to ask, if it has the category "adaptations of works by William Shakespeare", for there to be some discussion on it in the article?

The play is apparently "Hamlet" according to other articles but unless this is justified in this article, I will feel free to delete the category.Ed (talk) 22:06, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I agree that this is disconcerting. --Happy otter (talk) 12:45, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Noting Other Music

I've noticed that there are songs missing from the song list.

There are two songs in the show that are not featured on the cast recording but are performed nonetheless. The first is a Be Prepared reprise and the second is apparently titled Rafiki's Tree, and takes place immediately after the Be Prepared reprise, and is the moment in the show where Rafiki wipes the drawing of Simba away as Nala and Sarabi mourn their losses. So essentially, the order of the songs SHOULD read:

  • The Stampede
  • Rafiki Mourns
  • Be Prepared (reprise)
  • Rafiki's Tree
  • Hakuna Matata

Proof of these songs can be found on Youtube.

Rafiki's Tree Be Prepared (reprise)

I cannot change this on the page because I'm apparently not permitted to do so, so if someone could please make the changes, that would be lovely. Madeye666 (talk) 04:05, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

1997 soundtrack recording

I had a big "WTF" when I read: The Lion King [Original Broadway Cast Recording] is a cast recording released on 1997 by The Walt Disney Company, a recording of the songs as heard in the stage musical. Most of the tracks were composed by African composer Lebo M .

Huh? No...most of the tracks were composed by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.177.193.229 (talk) 01:10, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Incongruent dates?

Paragraph: The musical debuted July 8, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre, and was an instant success before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater on October 15, 1997 in previews with the official opening on November 13, 1997. On June 13, 2006, the Broadway production moved to the Minskoff Theatre to make way for the musical version of Mary Poppins, where it is still running after more than 5,350 performances. How can it move on a date before it had opened? This needs correction.

Looking a bit less like marketing

I've moved the (long) list of current productions to its usual place in articles about shows: after the synopsis (including list of songs for musicals) and the creation. After the opening, the most important thing about it is not that there's currently one touring production in the US...

Why does the 'official website' link go to its 'buy a ticket' section rather than its information about the musical? Lovingboth (talk) 14:23, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

This is a backlog note for the Broadway week ending date of Sunday, July 31, 2016: The Lion King's total of 9 performances for the week ending date of Sunday, July 31, 2016, as indicated by the industry standard, the Broadway League, is shown by the IBDb as having a total of 8 performances, rather than the 9 total performances as given by the Broadway League. This note is to clarify the difference between that of the Broadway League's correct total and that as incorrectly shown by the IBDb. The number of performances to date is currently 8,533 as of May 13th. Source: https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-production/the-lion-king-4761

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. IBDB is WP:USERGENERATED content and is not generally accepted as a reliable source. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 22:03, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Partly done: All of those sources say 8,000, so that's what I've updated the article to say. NiciVampireHeart 14:25, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello, I've made the following edits to the page. If you have any questions, please send me a bot.

  • In the 2nd paragraph, I added information about the Tony Awards and the number of people who's seen the Broadway play.
  • In the Infobox, I included a list of Tony Awards won.
  • I added the original Broadway production crew table
  • Under "Production History," I changed grammar in the "South America" paragraph. I also added information in the "Africa" paragraph. Fusion.lamar (talk) 20:28, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello! I've made the following edits to the page. Please send me a bot if you have any questions or concerns about my edits. In the last sentence of the very first paragraph, I added a citation and external link that shows that the Lion King Musical was produced by Disney Theatrical Productions. I also updated the current United States tour production dates in the Production History section directly under the subheading United States. I added the phrase "that is touring through the months of September 2018 through June of 2019." in the very first sentence under the subheading United States under Production History. I added in an external link that takes readers to the tour schedule for the 2018-2019 year. Lealavdrum (talk) 15:53, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Canadian Production History - Rewrite

Hello Wikipedians!

While reading the Canada section of the Production Histories of the musical, I noticed that the information in the section did not exactly match the source. It made sense to elaborate on the article as well, so I'd love my edits reviewed since they will culminate in a major change having rewritten the section! Playbill Magazine's reputable nature regarding Musical Theater confirms the need to resolve factual inconsistencies with the previous version of the section. There shouldn't be a problem, but a small mistake is easy to make! The edits I've made include a correction to the run date (Apr 25, 2000), mention of the director, as she directed the Broadway version[1], and the revival that occurred years later.[2] I also included data from the theater owner on the statistics of the run.[3] NiallCasey (talk) 21:07, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
