Long Overdue Addition[edit]

Yes, watching it on TCM was the impulse behind my adding it. I'm not sure how successful it is as a film, but it certainly is noteworthy, for many reasons. BTW Thanks for correcting the date on "One, Two, Three" - I don't know where I came up with 1953, must not have had my brain in gear. Plot Summary[edit]

Hmmm... I'm not sure. It's fine the way it is, except that it's really not a "plot summary" per se, more of a description of the film -- and I kind of hate to lose those two descriptive grafs from the lede. On the other hand, when I was thinking of whether we needed a plot section or not, I really thought it had to be kept quite short, so I like that aspect of it.

This looks good! I tried to emulate the Plot Summary for the article on the Patton movie. Since The Gallant Hours is based on actual events, like Patton, a detailed plot summary would be pretty redundant. Good job!Marcd30319 (talk) 15:45, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Five Week Period[edit]

All of the review that I have seen states that The Gallant Hours takes place over a five-week period. Recalling my recent viewing of the fiulm on TCM, I do remember that the flashback begins on 18 October 1942. The TV Guide film review gives that dates as October 18 to December 1, 1942. However, Adsmiral Yamamoto was killed on 18 April 1943, exactly sixth months after Admiral Halsey took command of the South Pacific Forces. Maybe we need to add a Historical Accuracy section. I have E.B. Potter's biography on Halsy, but it is packed away. Also, the Wikipedia article on Halsey is pretty slim on details.Marcd30319 (talk) 13:46, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Halsey's conference with Callaghan & Scott is also dubious; I don't have a book handy, but I don't think Halsey was on Guadalcanal during that battle. They'd have been meeting with Turner, if anyone.

Also, is the incident at the beginning — when the Japanese make an abortive effort to shoot down a plane which might be carrying a senior American officer — accurate? I've wondered if it was ... overemphasized ... to help justify the Yamamoto shootdown.

But I think I'd cut them some slack on using F6Fs to portray F4Fs, unless they were identified as Hellcats. I presume the film makers used the planes because their appearance is similar and they were more available when the film was made.
