Privately financed[edit]

What does this even mean? Aren't nearly all US movies financed by private sector money? Does the author mean that the underwriters are not industry professionals, or did not form a corporation, or viewed their investment as a cultural contribution rather than a business venture?

With people like the flamboyant and suave Arab business mogul/playboy Adnan Khashoggi or the Las Vegas casino patrons, my bet is they did see it as a cultural project or simply a whim - "this story looks great and the guys who did the Godfather films are involved, this is too good not to get made!" - rather than a cold-headed economic investment. Perhaps a means of money-laundry too. Either way, it really is a brilliant film, told and played with feeling, depth, humour, guts and conviction, and wonderful acting from Gere, Lane and the others. 83.254.154.164 (talk) 23:39, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
