Casimir and Bud[edit]

I'm pretty sure that Casimir and Bud are both black; maybe not Casimir, but I'm pretty sure about Bud. Can we get some external links to, say, interviews with Stephenson where he talks about this book? GoodSirJava 04:45, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would consider it highly, highly unlikely that a character named "Casimir Radon", whose family comes from Poland, is Black! I think the pallor of his skin is mentioned a couple times as well... Unfortunately, I can't lay hands on my copy of TBU right now. You are correct about Bud, though.

Casimir is most certainly not black, and is described as 'pale' several times throughout the novel. (obvious eastern european descent aside)

Bud is black, it is stated at one point that his, as well as Lucy's, ancestors were once slaves. It is mentioned at another time before that, although I don't remember the details. I am about 3/4 of the way done with this book, and I must say, it is really fuckin' strange, even having read Snow Crash and The Diamond Age. Both in context, and in writing style, it as if Neil Stephenson hasn't ever even seen another novel in his life...and that's not necessarally a bad thing.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.202.229.3 (talk • contribs) 05:01, July 16, 2008

Boston University financial crisis and lost library catalog[edit]

If anyone can find a citation for this, then add it back into the text, otherwise it had to go. Having the one sentence mentioning this with a "citation needed" warning isn't enough, it can easily look like this happened but that a suitable article hasn't been found or the old article was a broken link or whatever. "The idea of institutions of learning also serving as repositories of nuclear waste reappears in Anathem." It's been a while since I've read Anathem, but I can think of bigger spoilers in that novel than the nuclear waste bit. That being said, this is an encyclopedia, so it's assumed we're going to spill the beans on all kinds of things. Woodroar (talk) 04:01, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
