Church?[edit]

I've never heard it called the "Church of the Almighty Dollar." If somebody can site a source, please reword and include at the beginning with the other names. The spikes are already mentioned in the first paragraph; I don't think they count as spires. Also, the arches are Roman semi-circles, not Gothic pointed arches. I have a closeup picture I can add showing the main entrance's arch, if that would help. --W0lfie 14:28, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have not heard it referred to in that manner either, however the architect Phillip Johnson did refer to the banking hall as a cathedral of commerce or something to that affect. I am not sure of the exact quote and could not find it, but I recall that from my architecture school days. Not to mention I have NEVER heard the building referred to as "Spikey," either and I lived in Downtown Houston for 14 years. The article needs some clean up and I will take care of that.

You are also correct that the entry arches are more characteristic of a Roman Arches, however Dutch Gothic architecture did not use the pointed arch that is more common to French Gothic architecture. Johnson was known for mixing architectural styles and was criticized for the inaccurate historical references in his Postmodern work. The architecture of this building is meant to be more reminiscent of the buildings that line the canals of Amsterdam rather than the cathedrals of France. IceBRG 23:01, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very informative, thanks! I've been to Amsterdam a few times, but only briefly. --W0lfie 16:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
