REVAMPING[edit]

Myself and another member of Wikipedia are currently undertaking the job of fixing up a couple of the Avenged Sevenfold band member's biography Wikipedia entries. Please don't delete these pages. BoaDrummer 09:17, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not remove my edit. It is fact that Synyster uses Schecter Guitars, Bogner amplifiers and DID NOT ATTEND MIT. He attended the Musicians Institute, which is based in California.

I won't remove your edit. I did, however, add more detail about his schooling which he has verified personally. I also removed the information about his parents. It is unecessary and invades his family's privacy. The information you found about his equipment is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Could you please identify yourself? If not, I assume you're improv. --220.236.138.207 08:46, 7 March 2006 (UTC) <--should really make an account :|[reply]

My account name is Blarghblargh.

Hey. I'm new at this, so I don't even know if this post will show up the way I wanted it to... Anyways, someone's been screwing around with the article and adding thins like: "Born Brian Cornelius Gates, Brian's first guitar was..."; "(Little known fact, he is considered a master of the bagpipes)"; "he met the rest of the band through The Rev (peewee Herman). The Rev and Synyster Gates met in metal shop back in 8th grade when Jimmy started to make fun of Paolo..."; There might be more. I just wanted you to know. Past discussions[edit]

Please do not delete previous discussions between myself (--220.236.138.207 08:51, 7 March 2006 (UTC)) and Improv. They need to be left for historical clarity (for the lack of a better term).[reply]

Hello all, I've been working to keep this article full of a lot of really odd cruft that people keep adding to it. If you want to help, please try not to tell the world what his favourite colour is, instead, provide some background information, especially concerning where he was born, other people he's worked with, solo projects, etc. --Improv 08:44, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

We do not need to know his favourite band. That's completely irrelevant. I have removed that info. --Improv 02:45, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the favourite band of a musician is extremely important, as it gives a generally good idea on what the musician is interested in. Therefore, it is not completely irrelevant. Obviously, you are not a musician. --58.104.236.198 13:11, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

IMPROV: This is 58.104.236.198|58.104.236.198 Do not remove my edit. It is fact that Synyster uses Schecter Guitars, Bogner amplifiers and DID NOT ATTEND MIT. He attended the Musicians Institute of Technology, which is based in California. Why on earth would Synyster travel to MASS just to attend MIT when he has a very active band in California?

The information you and others keep adding is not relevant and does not make for a good article. Take a look at any article on any well-known musician, and it looks very different from this. I appreciate your work on the article, but the article keeps being made worse by a lot of the edits (whether done by you or other people), whether it be odd editorialising, useless information (thankfully, no blood type yet), or similar. --Improv 16:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Once again, it is obvious you are not a musician. If you were, you would know the relevance of adding the equipment he currently uses. A great deal of the guitarist's sound is determined by: the guitars he used, the effects (if any) that he uses, the amplification (infact, the electric guitar is not considered complete without an amplifier). Go to any guitar/musician related site or magazine. In almost every interview, they will ask what equipment the guitarist uses. Some individuals will pay upwards of $40,000 for a single, compact, single-effect unit just for the tone it produces. I am hoping you're beginning to see why it is relevant. Wikipedia is meant to be the sum of all human knowledge - 'all' being quite an operative word.

Furthermore - could you please tell me how adding that his parents feature on the song 'MIA' is more relevant than the equipment Synyster personally used? Just another thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hetfield See that equipment section? Please prove to me how adding that information degrades the article.

Wikipedia has not traditionally included certain kinds of information, and this falls outside the normal bounds of what is considered relevant for a musician, just as our coverage of Japanese artists typically does not include blood type. Similar not-relevant information might include the kind of car he drives, favourite colour, and similar. Take a look at articles on other musicians. --Improv 22:02, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Improv, have you listened to anything I have said? The information I put it was not frivilous, irrelevant information like the kind of car he uses or his favourite colour or his blood type (why anyone would need to know that, I'll never know). The information may not seem relevant, what with you probably not knowing a scrap about music production (let alone guitars), but it is. Its like noting what a race car driver races with - its the equipment they use in their career. Yes, I have read other articles and quite a few of them have mentioned the equipment they have used - for example, the James Hetfield articled I linked.

Please answer the questions I posed in my previous edit: could you please tell me how adding that his parents feature in the song MIA is more relevant (since it is just one song, and it is a detail that largely goes unnoticed) than adding the equipment Synyster uses, and please tell me how adding the equipment section under the James Hetfield article degraded it? Other articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirk_Hammett , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Satriani (passing references to his equipment), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Balzary history on basses he has used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musicians_Institute Just in case I need citation for Synyster's attendance at MI.

Looking into it more, it looks like you're right. Go ahead and add it back in. --Improv 01:49, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Its good to see we could come to an agreement. I'm going to do a bit more research into Synyster's equipment (mainly so I can get citation links) and his life. --220.236.245.216 10:26, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Andrew is not his middle name. This is unsourced (and irrelevant/possibly too personal)information, anyway, so it has been deleted. The part about his father that was deleted is not only unsourced but an arguable violation of privacy, depending on your point of view of the subject. These two things have been deleted. I also specified where that statement comes from, I might try to find the name of the right magazine if I have the time, later on. But as it stands, it is not sourced information until someone has a link, anyway. I left it up for now. -66.215.204.240

Don't you think it's just a little silly to be saying that knowing his dad's name is an invasion of privacy? Let alone knowing Synyster's real middle name? Many other articles do it - yes, I know thats appealling to a logical fallacy but bear with me - so why should this article be different in that respect? --58.105.87.180 12:21, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's silly at all, I actually think it's silly to put it there. About the dad, I meant the (now deleted) part where someone wrote that the band all called him "papa gates". I mean, honestly... what do any of those things have to do with an article like this one? Nothing. Personal information like nicknames that they call each other and their family members just has no place in here. And I have yet to see an article on Wikipedia that does this, unless it carries some kind of huge importance to the band. Not to mention both the middle name and the "papa gates" ordeal have no sources. It's just dumb and silly and no one needs to know that kind of thing. If you've read things like that in the press, that is different because a lot of the music magazines you see with articles about this band haven't exactly lived an honest reputation, a lot of what they've written is inaccurate and they don't need sources... and the point of this whole site is to be as accurate as possible. -66.215.204.240

I just re-read your entry (above mine). Obviously, I misread it earlier (must stop reading articles late at night). Anyway, I do agree with you on the 'papa gates ordeal' and such. They have no place in this article.

Guitars[edit]

Can anyone offer a bit more on what guitars Syn owns? I believe he owns some ESP's, LTD's and possibly a Schecter Tempest Blackjack. I have a photo of what I believe to be his guitar rack: http://cityofevil.net/gallerie/displayimage.php?album=29&pos=29 and http://cityofevil.net/gallerie/displayimage.php?album=29&pos=27. Could any give a hand on identifying all of them? --58.104.230.61 07:57, 12 April 2006 (UTC) I should really register :|}[reply]

No, his equipment is not irrelevant. I have restored it - impulsively removing that list is vandalism.--211.29.163.21 12:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

...what the?[edit]

I removed the following comment:

  • Gates is considered the "guitar genius" of his time.

I've heard the guy's name mentioned once before in my whole life. I read that he won a prize for being the best shredder, but that doesn't make him a guitar genius. 212.213.90.13 15:21, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There was a sentence "Best guitarist in wthe(sic) world according to Joshua Broussard.", which I was just about to remove (googling for ""Joshua Broussard" synyster gates" brought up nothing) when I noticed someone else had just removed it. Who keeps adding these comments about him being the best guitarist/guitar genius/extremely hot? 212.213.90.13 18:17, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merger[edit]

I, for one, believe that this page should not be merged with the Avenged Sevenfold page. It's very detailed, well-written, and is SOURCED. I believe that those details are enough reason to keep it by itself. --BoaDrummer 06:09, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But he's non-notable. I can write a very well written article about Frank Turner's guitar, but it doesn't mean it desevres one, no matter how well I source it... Can you assert notability? HawkerTyphoon 23:38, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is he not notable? He's the lead guitarist in one of the biggest mainstream metal bands around today. ``76.21.69.28 02:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The band is notable - he is not - all he has done is been in the band! HawkerTyphoon 19:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think the fact that he's in a notable band is enough to make him notable. Definitely should not be merged with Avenged Sevenfold. Actually somebody should also start an article about M. Shadows and Johnny Christ. Marcus1234 19:39, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Prove that he's notable, according to the notability guidelines. That's what I'm going on... HawkerTyphoon 20:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And it's not just that he's in the band. He's also one of the frontmen of the band!--BoaDrummer 01:53, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the guidelines you'd want to be following are actually located here. For one, he and fellow A7X guitarist Zacky Vengeance have been featured in one of the biggest guitar magazines, Guitar Player, on the cover, as well[1], and was voted best shredder in the Metal Hammer Golden God awards (Metal Hammer being an EXTREMELY popular magazine in the UK)[2]. He, along with the band have been featured in numerous magazine articles in many notable magazines and publications[3], and have been featured on TV shows and interviews on MTV and Fuse TV[4][5]. Being one of the key members of the band, this MUST show notability of the member. --BoaDrummer 01:17, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If no one else has an opinion on this, I think I'll delete the tag. We have a three to one vote to keep. --BoaDrummer 07:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree that he is in no way the "Best guitarist of his time". By far no. Talented, granted, but no where near the best.

If this issue is still open,I say keep the page seperate because for one thing, people like Avenged Sevenfold yes but some may want to know what's behind the band and he is a key element in their success whether you agree or not. Two, he is very notable as an individual anyway, the most obvious reason being if he wasnt notable he wouldnt be out there and famous right now,and he is one of the more well known members of the band, which means he makes himself known, which is something tat is very hard for most people and a crediable thing to do.Thanks for your time and I am in big favor of keeping it seperate.

                                                                                                            --Kit
I'm in favor to keep it, too. Not only has he played in A7X, but he's also been in Pinkly Smooth. So not everything he's done has been in Avenged.

Question[edit]

Alright, I know it is very irrelevant, but I am simply confused. Is Synyster dating Michelle DiBennedeto or have they broken up. I noticed a fact on here not too long ago that he runs his clothing line with 'girlfriend Michelle DiBennedeto', and I was confused because several sources claim he is not. Please clear thi up for me, and thank you.

User: skeletalxemoxheart 4:28, 17, October, 2007 —Preceding comment was added at 21:28, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He's still dating Michelle, but they don't run the clothing line together. He runs it himself. I also thought I'd add that I changed what some idiot had put his name as - Evan James Haner, Jr? WTF? If he's a 'junior' that means he has the same name as his father, Brian Haner Sr. It's also common knowledge that his middle name is Elwin.

He's actually engaged to Michelle. He said it himself an in interview back in November.

He has been married to her for a while now but when he still had a clothing line she would design it. She is a professional fashion designer. Haila7x 6661 (talk) 02:35, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Guitars[edit]

I did some editing on the guitars he uses. Info on his current guitar can be found here, while the rest of his guitar gear can be found on various Bio pages based on Synyster Gates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnh5lhKz7Gc

Youtube is not a reliable source, please find alternatives. Gnangarra 13:48, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Youtube is a great source when the video is synyster gates himself talking about it. Thanks for ruining the synyster gates article. Prick —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.175.191.188 (talk) 03:24, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Burn Halo[edit]

It says on the page that The Rev and Syn have joined James Hart's new project Burn Halo, but I've yet to find anything confirming The Rev and nothing about Syn besides soloing in one song. Syn has not been the only guitarist to record a solo or guitar pieces for Burning Halo. Does anyone have information to this being an actual side project and not just an association? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.113.237.153 (talk) 01:53, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, as much as I know this is not their project, Syn was the guest guitar player in one of their songs but that's it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.196.206.7 (talk) 16:40, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, two songs, but whatever. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.74.137 (talk) 20:07, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

syn and the rev had a side project called pinkly smooth and released one cd (the unfortunate snort) which i own and highly recommend to any fan of "A Little Peice of Heaven"...but anyways, pinkly is now retired in order for syn and rev to focus on their career with A7X...after saying that, why in the hell would they want to do another side-project..although i need to look more into the rumor that pinkly is going to put out another cd. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.185.129.125 (talk) 19:19, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Guest Apperances Box[edit]

I think syn needs a guest apperance box like M Shadows has he has been in two other songs and im sure it would help those fans out there. Im going to add it but if anyone has any objections you can delete it A7xTheRev (talk) 15:39, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Father and Son[edit]

Synyster Gates is NOT Guitar Guy from Jeff Dunham's shows. Guitar Guy is actually Brian Haner Sr., his father. Therefore, all references to Jeff Dunham have been removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.198.135.119 (talk) 22:58, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hate when people mix it up too Haila7x 6661 (talk) 02:36, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Openning paragraph is WAY too long[edit]

The openning paragraph needs to be atleast half as long as it is. Especially since all the info on his page (appart from equipment) is in it. Could some one clean it up and put it into appropriet sections in the actual body of the article? Xanthic-Ztk (talk) 03:36, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adam Aparicio and Francis Canavan[edit]

It is written as they are among Syn's favorite guitarists. Who are they anyway? Does anybody know?

I've searched through Google and it looks like vandalism crap to me. CassioLincoln (talk) 11:19, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
