So What?[edit]

Okay, Folks, help me out here. Help me understand what's so important about the Pioneer cemetary that we have to give it top billing and place it near the top of this article about Sylmar. Okay, yes, it's a really old cemetary. I get that. But it's not even the oldest in the valley.

If I don't get some good answers, I'd like to move this down to a suitable spot, or remove it altogether. Let me know if anyone disagrees. Thanks -- tk --75.79.7.78 (talk) 06:19, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]


It is the oldest non-sectarian cemetery in the valley; maybe in all of Los Angeles. Any older are connected to churches. According to a plaque at the site, the cemetery was the starting point for a rescue of a wagon train stranded in Death Valley. The plaque gives the date of the rescue and some details, including names.

Sylmar is a place with many ranches and small farms.

Sylmar is no longer a place with many ranches and farms. This hasn't been true since the collapse of the local olive industry in the mid 1930's. In 1990, there were only 4 areas over an acre with the original olive trees. The last of the large patches of the olive groves were ripped out for a new housing development in the summer of 2006. Origin of "Sylmar"[edit]

I can't find a cite to confirm, but I think the name comes from a portmanteau of the Latin "sylvan" meaning trees and the Latin "mar" meaning sea; hence "sea of trees"; which makes more sense than the English "silver" and the Latin "mar". Johnny Whitaker[edit]

I've re-added Johnny Whitaker as a notable person from Sylmar because he graduated from high school there. I think in the US most of us would consider ourselves "from" a place if that's where we went to school. Alex Mejia is listed as "from" Sylmar because he was born there. Should he be delisted since he didn't live there for whatever arbitrary amount of time is required to be considered "from" a place? No, I don't think so.
I lived in Sylmar in the same apartment complex as Johnny's sister, Laurie, and they felt they were "from" Sylmar. I realize my anecdote is not a RS. But here's their mother's obituary; note services were in Sylmar in 2014. I'd say that's sufficient to say Johnny's "from" Sylmar in some sense strong enough to list him here. Yep. {{Adjacent communities}} only for immediately adjacent places. This was established at an RfC, and the only reason this template was not flat-out deleted was consensus to permit its usage for that exact purpose, solely. Need to dig up the RfC(s) and/or TfD(s) about this thing, or people are going to continue wikilawyering about it. The template documentation probably needs to be made more explicit about what it is and is not for, with a link to the consensus discussion that most recently established that. The revert-happy users in question also needs to be pointed to WP:ARBINFOBOX and WP:ARBINFOBOX2: wikiprojects cannot dictate templates, style, content, or anything else at articles, especially not on a categorical basis. This is also very clear from WP:CONLEVEL (a.k.a. WP:LOCALCONSENSUS) policy. See also WP:PROJPAGE: article layout advice pages by wikiprojects on geography or any other topic are essays, and cannot trump site-wide consensus (e.g. as found in RfCs or TfDs) on the appropriate use of a template. And, yes, it is a navbox. It is not used mid-article, even if it's correctly used for adjacent communities only. Its explicit and only purpose is navigating between articles on juxtaposed communities. If it comes up again, please direct people to this discussion so it's centralized. If it comes down to it, we can have yet another RfC about it, but that really shouldn't be necessary. In the interim, it may be best to move them to where they belong (with other navboxes) rather than delete them, as long as they otherwise comply with the template instructions or can be fixed to do so (directly adjacent places only, and not encrusted with flag icons).  — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼  20:42, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nav Boxes do not belong in the middle of wikipedia articles per Template_talk:Adjacent_communities#Geographic_Boxes.
It says: "WP:LAYOUTNAV specifies that Navboxes, including geography boxes such as this one, are placed after the External links section (i.e., immediately before categories; they should also be placed after stub templates."

Change Facts on San Fernando Valley Earthquake[edit]

Hi, I am new to editing on Wikipedia and I noticed an error on the article page about Sylmar. According to the Conservation.ca.gov, Gavin Newsom, the governor of California explained how The 1971 San Fernando Valley earthquake was in the city of Northridge, not Sylmar. Population update needed[edit]
