Music

also, i believe the music credit is wrong. unlike an impressive number of nintendo games, kondo-san didn't do all the music himself, but had help from a second composer. i could be wrong.

I just beat the game. The credits, under music, list "Koji Kondo" and "Shinobu Tanaka", so I updated the page. --AshyRaccoon 09:24, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

Not the latest anymore

Not sure if this is correct or how to rephrase it, but with the recent release of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, wouldn't SMS no longer be the latest console game in the Mario series?

The Mario RPG/Paper Mario series is a spinoff series. SMS is still the latest "pure platformer" Mario game. Nifboy 04:49, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I say The TTYD games are credible as main forays in the series. It's just a different genre. -- A Link to the Past 13:11, August 5, 2005 (UTC)

Enemy pages

I don't think seperate pages for all the enemies is necessary. Can't you just include them in the main article, or make a new page to have them all in? [Ragey]

Seperate pages make sense, since many of the enemies are shared across different Mario games. -- Grumbel 16:42, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

I agree with Grumbel. Sometimes articles are required. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.247.202.127 (talk) 22:10, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Packaging Suggestions

Can we put the game packaging for the US/Japanese verisons on the bottom of the page? -- User:Thief Lord 15:02 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Criticisms

"It is often stated is that Nintendo missed many opportunities to rectify this; for example, despite the game's tropical theme, they failed to include a water level, which would have been a definite break from the rest of the game."

The term "water level" is pretty ambiguous. From what I remember, there were several "water" levels. In particular the level where there's a bay, and the poluted water level with the cliffside.

I agree. Is there a reference to the phrase "L is real" in this game, because I heard you find it somewhere in Delfino, but I never found it? I'm the L is real 2041 guy in these parts. It's definitely in more than just SM64 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.247.202.127 (talk) 22:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Too much criticism

I don't understand the point of such a long "Criticism" section, detailing every problem everyone could ever have had with the game. Very few game articles ever go into such a ridiculous amount of detail about the things people disliked in the game, and that section is just nitpicking - never mind that SMS IS a high quality game and it's unfair to bring up complaints and criticism that stands on pretty weak ground. I get that some people didn't like the large amount of change FLUDD brang, and some people disliked the lack of variety, but a lot of the rest of the criticism is unnecessary. A lot of it can be removed, and the section changed into more of a "Response" or "Reviews" section like many other games get, also citing more of the positive aspects of the game from sites that reviewed it very highly (of which there were a lot). --Impossible 07:31, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Phrase Removals

Sorry not to log in, but this is emerald2000. I've changed Il Piantissimo, similar to koopa the Quick of Super Mario 64, you must race II Piantissimo to a flag to achieve your reward. Not considered a boss by some, though he technically fits the definiton. He appears to be a short, dark-skinned, goateed man wearing a vest and purple shorts, shoes, gloves and a Pianta mask. This description also fits the Running Man from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and the Postman from Majora's Mask. We all know how popular masks are in Hyrule, don't we...?

Goombas in Sunshine?

The article's enemies-section mentions Goombas, but I do not recall seeing any Goombas in this game. Do you think the writer may have gotten it mixed up with Koopas? Or is there a Goomba somewhere in the game that I've missed? (user:HannuMakinen)

  • The Goombas' page does not mention Sunshine so I'm just gonna change Goomba to Koopa. (user:HannuMakinen)

Glitches

Innuendo in the game

Believe it or not, there is sexual innuendo in the game.

At the end of Pinna Park, episode one, there is a very questionable cutscene. Shadow Mario reveals his real identity: Bowser Jr. And apparently, Bowser made Bowser Jr. believe that Princess Peach was his mother. Even though this seems questionable, Bowser Jr. disproves it at the end of the game.

--Plainnym 17:05, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

this makes me laugh a lot, I feel it's imprtant to note, that before bowser jr. mentions bowser, and he calls peach his mommy, peach says "so your bowsers son." Despite the fact that she is terrible at recognising people and teeling people apart. earlier in the game, she mistook shadow Mario for Mario, oblivious to the fact that the real mario, isn't blue and shiney.

Also bowser's face when Bowser Jr. says "I know, she's not really my mommy," It's sort of a "Oh.... yeah! that's what I was going to say! face!"

although I don't think it should be mentioned on the page.

Zoophilia? Bowser is not an animal. Son of a Peach 18:16, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Well he's not human, is he?

Also--"The only known boss that was used in its first beta versions is a giant walking banana-like enemy that spurts paint out of the top of its "head". When ran up to, it will run into a pit, where its "weak spot", the top of its head, will be exposed. By jumping on it, the banana enemy will shrivel up, then explode." Ending

There's no details on what happens at the end of the game. I think this would be useful. I haven't played it for a while so I can't remember what happens after you beat the last boss and I don't know what happens after you collect all the shines. Anyone able to write that? Clean is better than dirty!

While it may not be that important, perhaps this article should also discuss that corny "clean is better than dirty" commercial that played often when this game was released.

Don't forget the Nokis!

There's a part of this article dedicated to Piantas but not Nokis. You see Nokis in the game about as much as Piantas, so someone needs to write about them.

Spoilers and "Prototype"

There are spoilers in this atricle (including the identity of Shadow Mario) that are not marked as such. They should be. It also says that a prototype version "has not been found" and then that a prototype vesion included other human characters. Could someone show a picture of the Banana creature and the humans?--Rat235478683--

The whole section about 60 vs 30 frames per second doesn't make sense. Standard televisions are only capable of doing 30 frames per second. I think this is getting confused with FIELDS per second or 60i. Anyway, if this game runs at 30 FRAMES per second, its doing the max.

Gooper Blooper

THis is an extremely minor character whose only major appeareance is in this game as one of the eight obsses. Per WP:FICT, I am suggesting that this should be merged. Hbdragon88 23:40, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Wouldn't a character list be better seeing as it has made multiple reappearances (although small)? Nemu 23:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Merge with Mario series enemies, in the Super Mario Sunshine section. -- Lord Crayak

I guess its true that Gooper really hasnt had a major role in any Mario game except Mario Sunshine and Super Princess Peach, and his role in both games was to be a boss with no dialouge, but maybe in time they will reveal more information on him, just like Petey Piranha who appeared as a simple boss in sunshine but then he was classified as the king of pirahna plants and made more appearances in other games, who knows maybe Gooper is the king of the Bloopers, but if everyone agrees that he doesnt deserve his own article yet then maybe he should be placed in Mario series enemies. 66.50.95.52 01:21, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm with Giantdevilfish; it should be merged with Blooper (Mario), not Super Mario Sunshine. Gooper Blooper has appeared in more than just SMS and Super Princess Peach, and it will expand the Blooper article, too. Hardcore gamer 48 13:11, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Giantdevilfish as well. It really doesn't belong in the SMS article, as it has also been in Mario Power Tennis, and it is still possible (though not exactly likely) for it to make further appearances. Blooper (Mario) sounds like the way to go. --LuigiManiac 13:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, I guess Giant devilfish is right, Gooper would be better suited in the Blooper article. 66.50.95.182 17:30, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

There's honestly nothing to talk about outside of their respective roles as minor characters (Blooper only appears in about 5 levels in SMB). There is plenty of precedent for merging minor characters into the game of their most major appearance; i.e. Patsy Ramsey redirects to JonBenét Ramsey because her notability is directly correlated into the death of her daughter, nothing more. Arguably, Gooper Blooper is pretty much only notable as a boss in SMS, which is why I was setting up the proposal to here instead of Blooper (Mario). I may go to AFD with Blooper as well. hbdragon88 00:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I just merged it into the Blooper article. That's good enough for now. Nemu 15:27, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Why were the characters and areas sections removed?

Why were these sections removed? They were perfectly reasonable and hardly "game guide" encyclopedic contenet. If Pianta and Noki aren't covered in this article, then they should have their own pages back, as they have no longer been merged into the article. Oh, and where is the consensus for merging Pianta anyway? Henchman 2000 18:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

It appears that the Noki article was merged per Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Noki, but Pianta was incredibly merged by User:Nifboy only 13 minutes after adding a notices.--Bobby D. DS. 05:59, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Second best-selling GameCube game?

In this source it indicates Super Mario Sunshine sold 5.5 million copies and in this other source it states that "Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best selling GameCube title ever, with over 6 million copies sold worldwide..." So there is no source that says Super Mario Sunshine is the second best-selling game on the GameCube and the List of best-selling video games article can't be used as a source as Wikipedia articles can't be used as sources. --Silver Edge (talk) 23:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Prince, you are the one claiming it's reliable; you need to justify it and this is just plain strange. That's not the standard for a reliable source. I honestly don't see how it is reliable at all. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 09:25, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Gamecritics.com

The question of whether gamecritics was reliable or not came up on a FAC some time ago, I'm not sure which, it might've been Halo (series). Either way, I sent emails to a bunch of people, I've copied the email below:

On 6/1/08, David Fuchs sent a message using the contact form at http://www.gamecritics.com/contact.

Hello, my name is David Fuchs and I am an administrator and contributor at Wikipedia. One of Wikipedia's policies [blah blah blah...] I was wondering if you could answer the following questions regarding the site:

  • How long has GameCritics been active?
  • Do the site founders/editors fact-check or review staff writing before it is posted?
  • Does the site retract pieces or edit them after posting if corrections are found?

I got a reply, from Chi Kong Lui, the owner of the site. I could quote him, but I'm not sure what the legality of that is, so settle for paraphrasing; he said that 1) they've been around since 1999, 2) Their reviews and featured articles are fact-checked, by the editor and writers, and two editors review before publication. Blog posts are fact-checked once, but have no editorial oversight. He assured me that errors are corrected and articles amended and updated with new information or if errors are found.

User:Ealdgyth reviewed the site and left it up to other reviewer deference over use or not. I should not that it depends how the source is being used; if the source is being used to state trivial facts, it's generally easy to replace it with a better one. If it's being used as a review, stating the opinion and publication makes it clear it's one person's opinion and it's generally more permissable. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:01, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Mysteries

I noticed there are some very mysterious things throughout the game. Look at Peach's outfit in Delfino near the game's beginning. Observe it near the end. Not only in the color several shades darker, but the outfit has undergone many minor (but noticeable) changes. Is there a reason for this? Also, Shadow Mario can be seen from a point in Delfino. While looking across at the miniature island, a dark figure can be seen darting around. This cannot be seen from all angles, I've noticed, but you'll see it if you look. Another interesting point is Bowser's romantic interest in Peach. If you start a save file called "BowserandPeach", and then start a new file, every line from Bowser that contains the word Peach will be in dark pink. All of these things are in the game. Look for them if you don't believe me. Did anybody else find anything? This game is mysterious... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.247.202.127 (talk) 22:40, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

<REPLY> Unfortunately, this type of information is difficult to include in the article for two reasons. The first one is the original research, those details are being noticed by you but, according to the policies, that information needs to be already published on a reliable source. If not, then how can you verify it? The second reason, much crueler, is the notability. In which way this information can improve the content of the article? I know, you feel disappointed, but it is the heartless way Wikipedia works. 148.233.157.234 (talk) 19:16, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

You can't name save files in Sunshine, so verifying that claim is borderline impossible. 129.67.177.214 (talk) 22:27, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

In answer to the first comment, the "BowserandPeach" thing is not possible in this game. Maybe you're thinking of another one? I have noticed the dark figure darting around, but can you prove that it's "Dark Mario". I also noticed the change in colour in Peach's outfit, but this may just be a misight on behalf of the game's creators, and isn't really notable. 99.247.244.120 (talk) 19:10, 6 December 2008 (UTC)This Name Is Too Long, Isn't It? Legacy Contreversy

For starters, none of the information in this section really has anything to do with a 'legacy' i.e the games impact on the series/industry/world etc... many articles on wikipedia have a 'legacy' section but it helps to understand what the word means.

It might be better to mention the new elements (Shine Sprites etc) in passing, during the main description of the game, and if there needs to be a legacy section, perhaps state the significant changes to the series as a whole, such as the significance of FLUDD (necessary for almost the entire game, for the first time Mario has to rely heavily on what may be viewed as an item or a partner, and the significance of that in relation to other games that have a similar scheme such as Banjo Kazzoie or Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.34.66.14 (talk) 05:08, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

This is the first Mario game where Princess Peach wears her hair in a ponytail which would be used in future Mario Kart games and the future Mario Sports games from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour onward.

I'm not sure if it is worth including on here or on her article.

  •  Not done To be honest this sort of information seems too trivial to be included on Wikipedia. Even if it was noteworthy, a reliable source is needed to back up the claim. --The1337gamer (talk) 18:55, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
    • It is shown in the actual game and no other Mario game beforehand has ever depicted her with her hair in a ponytail before this game.--198.13.144.35 (talk) 19:06, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Open world

Why isn't this part of the open world video games category? Super Mario 64 is part of it, and both games are very similar.

Because they existed before the term was commonplace, and thus have no sources directly calling them that. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 01:11, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
Not every game with a degree of freedom is considered "open world" anyways. Sergecross73 msg me 12:50, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
