Hans Keller described this as "a bad arrangement of a wind piece in mock-Haydn style" in The Mozart Companion – one of his very rare lapses of insight. For sure, KV 593 and 614 are different from 515 and 516; but not worse. (The Cambridge Companion to Mozart, of course, explains some of this difference in Mozart's "late style" of 1789–91, as opposed to his style of the mid-1780s.) Last major chamber work[edit]

Although not for lack of trying. There is a draft of a seventh quintet in A minor (KV 515c+515a), consisting of the exposition of a first movement (Allegro moderato, common time in A minor) and the main theme of a slow movement (Andante, F minor). From the Köchel numbers (assigned by Einstein in the 3rd edition), we can see that they were once thought to be connected to the C major quintet KV 515 (because it too has a slow movement in F major, and A minor is the relative key of C major and would make a logical key for a companion work). But this was later disproved by Alan Tyson's paper studies: "A very late paper-type, confined to the year 1791, and found (for instance) in the E-flat string quintet, K.614. Could these be drafts for an opening Allegro and a slow movement of a planned A-minor quintet of 1791?". The existing fragment is very promising and would complete a set of three quintets dating from winter to spring of 1790/1791 (KV 593, KV 614, and KV 515c+515a), just like the set of three from 1787 (KV 515, KV 516, and KV 516b, the last a time-saving arrangement of KV 384a).
