Revision needed[edit]

This article, while informative, obviously is not written by a native English speaker. A major edit is needed to meet Wikipedia standards. B Tillman, Dec. 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.162.218.122 (talk) 17:41, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The assertion that Steve's spark plugs burned out or that that they came from a Spitfire is unsubstantiated. (and probably irrelevant to this type of entry). The footnote to that line references the Air Academy bio of Steve and some of the wording of this article is lifted from there. It only says that he developed engine trouble. My father was an air engineering officer with the 4th Fighter Group and had responsibility for the spark plug shop. The notion that the group was still using plugs from Spitfires in 1944 that the group transitioned out of in the spring of 1943 is not supportable. Plugs were pulled from aircraft after each mission and rebuilt. Where appropriate, new components replaced old, worn components. M.
