Checking against GA criteria[edit]

To uphold the quality of Wikipedia:Good articles, all articles listed as Good articles are being reviewed against the GA criteria as part of the GA project quality task force. While all the hard work that has gone into this article is appreciated, unfortunately, as of March 7, 2010, this article fails to satisfy the criteria, as detailed below. For that reason, the article has been delisted from WP:GA. However, if improvements are made bringing the article up to standards, the article may be nominated at WP:GAN. If you feel this decision has been made in error, you may seek remediation at WP:GAR.

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
Stem cells are cells found in most, if not all, multi-cellular organisms. They are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and differentiating into a diverse range of specialized cell types. appears to be a copyright violation of this paper {http://med.shams.edu.eg/protocols/Medicine/MS-2008-Medi-Wassiem%20William.pdf} - first sentence
''The practical definition of a stem cell is the functional definition - a cell that has the potential to regenerate tissue over a lifetime. For example, the gold standard test for a bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) is the ability to transplant one cell and save an individual without HSCs. appears to be a very close parapharse of {http://scgs.stemcellgf.org/doc/SCGS-2009%20report.doc} - page 4
Nearly all research to date has taken place using mouse embryonic stem cells (mES) or human embryonic stem cells (hES). Both have the essential stem cell characteristics, yet they require very different environments in order to maintain an undifferentiated state is from {http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20100041054} - a patent application
    The use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not as controversial as embryonic stem cells, because the production of adult stem cells does not require the destruction of an embryo. is from {http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/a/adult_stem_cell.htm}
OK, I will place this on hold now and ask for comment from major contributors and projects. Jezhotwells (talk) 20:54, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that in fact these are copyright violations in the other direction. User:LeadSongDog has pointed out that these phrases are in a December 2007 version of this article, predating the only papers. I had no idea that plagiarism was so rife in the word of medical academics. The sites with copyright notices should in fact be contacted to show that they are using Wikipedia material without attribution. Jezhotwells (talk) 11:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Key research events: This might be better represented in graphical format as per WP:Timeline.
Overall, the article reads rather more like an essay than an encyclopaedia article. Consider a copy-edit for style.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
I found a number of dead links using WP:CHECKLINKS, repaired those that I could and tagged the others. Not done
References that I have been able to verify appear to be RS.
  1. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  2. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  3. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  4. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  5. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
Just a few style issues and dead links to be fixed. I shall check back on 7 March, on hold until then. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:07, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still a number of dead links, some work has been done, but not enough to keep GA status so I am delisting. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:21, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
