Comment on notability[edit]

In case this comes up, the subject is notable, as per Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Creative_professionals criteria 4b and 4d: "The person's work either (b) has been a substantial part of a significant exhibition or (d) is represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums." --_{Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me} 19:40, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I find it questionable whether the intention behind those notability rules is met when the museums in question are history museums, not art galleries, and his works are clearly not being collected for their value as artworks. I would also want to see more documentation of substantial critical literature about him. How much is there in the Sokol (2000) book you cite in fn 1? Because that appears to be the only reliable source so far that is actually dealing with him as a painter and as a subject in its own right. All the others either just barely mention his existence or that of some painting of his, or are merely using one of the paintings as an incidental means of illustrating some historical topic. So far I've seen no critical attention to the artist as such and his work, at all. Fut.Perf. ☼ 20:08, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will not be able to look at the Sokol book for a month. You are always welcome to take it to AFD, but I do not find the N(B) interpretation to be controversial. His works are in museums, and it doesn't matter what type of museums they are. If it was, it should be clarified in N(B). Not sure I understand your question. Are you disputing spelling of his name? As I said, I do not have access (online or offline) to this work at present. I'll change the ref anyway to represent the one I found that mentions his second name. Anyway, since you reminded me of Google snippets, I did a search on Google Books and he is mentioned in numerous ones. I don't have time to do more research right now, but he is mentioned in context discussing him in several works: [1], [2]. Although I am unable to tell you how extensive the mention of him is, I can see enough to allow me to say it is not a simple attribution of a painting, but that he is listed in the text body, in sentences like "chief representatives of this trend included... , SG, ....". In any case, one does not need to have his art critically discussed in detail to be a notable artist - presence of one's work in museums is enough. At least, that's my interpretation of WP:N(B) and if you disagree, we need to involve more community in our discussions. PS.
