The image https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stavropol_Krai#/media/File:Map_of_Russia_-_Stavropol_Krai.svg shows Crimea as part of the Russian Federation. Crimea is officially and legaly a part of Ukraine and illegaly accupied by Russian Federation armed forces. Please correct the map. User123456789123 (talk) 07:05, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Established October, 1924?[edit]

The shape of North Caucasus Krai was not that of later Stavropol Krai then - it was much bigger - and in the end Stavropol wasn't its capital. So in which way Stavropol Krai should be established October 1924 ? Notice that Azov-Black Sea Krai with Rostov, the capital of N. C. Krai from 1924 on, was split away from N. C. Krai in 1934. Rather December 1936 fits as founding date of Stavropol Krai, when according to Soviet Constitution of 1936 Dagestan ASSR and 3 to date Autonomous Oblasti of North Caucasus were separated from N. C. Krai. Then named city Voroshilovsk (today Stavropol) became capital of N. C. krai (1937 renamend Ordzhonikidze Krai, 1943 Stavropol Krai), and its territory roughly was stable since then to our days. --88.217.113.23 (talk) 10:21, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point, it is a somewhat ambiguous choice (which is why there is a footnote), but there just isn't winning here. No matter which date you pick, someone's going to be unhappy about it :)
Here's how it goes in this case. The date of "establishment" is definitely not always the one when the entity got its present name, and studying how the entity shape changed over time would be pure original research (plus, by that logic, the krai was most recently "established" in 1991, when Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast was transformed into a republic and split out). So, normally, the "establishment" date is the one given by the majority of sources, regardless of the rationale behind the choice. However, when those sources contradict one another or (like here) tend skirt the issue, then the date of the most recent establishment of an entity of the same type (in this case, a krai), covering the existing territory, is used. In this case, Stavropol Krai, formerly known as Ordzhonikidze Krai, formerly known as North Caucasus Krai, formerly a much bigger entity, was established in October 1924. One can also make an argument that the date should be February 1924 (like this source does), but since the krai/oblast status of South-East is ambiguous, October is used instead.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); August 11, 2017; 14:06 (UTC)
