- St Mary's has a reputation for being one of the more desirable schools to attend in the Chesterfield area (or at least among parents) and is inaffectionately referred to as St.Fairies (see Fairy_(disambiguation) by some students and staff at other schools. Academically the school performs better than others in the area, but unlike other secondary schools in Chesterfield it has no "catchment area" and may "pick and choose" its students, who are either usually R.C. or promising academically.

The School's name has been altered to: St Mary's Catholic High School. ref their own website. The school has close links to the following Chesterfield parishes of St Hugh of Lincoln, Littlemoor and the Holy Family parish on the Derby Road, Chesterfield. Not just the Annunciation parish as stated, in the present entry. There are also close links with other parishes within the diocese of Hallam. (ref. school prospectus and diocese of Hallam website)
