Ben Stein[edit]

According to Ben Stein's entry in Wikipedia, he grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, which is in Montgomery County, not St. Mary's County. Which one is correct?

I pretty sure that it is Silver Spring, i recall seeing a tv program about silver spring, and they talked to several people that grew up their over the years, the two most prominent were Ben Stine and Goldie Hawn. --Boothy443 | comhrá 04:05, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Named incorrectly[edit]

You should cite a reliable source that the official name uses only the abbreviation. It's comparable to insisting that because most people refer to "Washington, DC", that there is no such thing as "District of Columbia". Tedickey (talk) 15:46, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding redirect - sure: Census Bureau uses abbreviations extensively (as does the Post Office). But there are very few instances that come to mind where a geographic location's official name is an abbreviation. That thing about Washington, DC makes no sense at all to me. That is not an appropriate analogy whatsoever. Besides I just moved to "St. Mary's County". I've been here for two weeks now and have driven past numerous official government signs that say "St. Mary's County" VERBATIM. EXACTLY. Also since when ISN'T "St." an exceedingly common and well used abbreviation for "Saint"??? Is that something that REALLY needs a citation?? If so, please excuse my ignorance. It just seems that from common, official government usage, one will the exact phrase "St. Mary's County" almost exclusively. In fact I'm not sure that I've seen anything official that actually DOES say "Saint Mary's County". I think if anything we need a citation for that!! Having lived in Southern Maryland (in Charles) for 20 some-odd years, it's always been "St." as far as I can remember. I'd say that no citation is needed really. If it's absolutely required, then I'd cite the County Seal, which is visible in the Infobox on the article page. "Saint Marys County" would not even be recognized, or searched for, by most readers familiar with the county. It would render the article so obscure as to be useless.

It has to be left alone though (urgent note, not "shouting"), it turns out that the highlighted map of the county in the infobox (within the larger Maryland state outline) and also the official seal of the county, are both only retrieved and shown on the page when "Saint" is used (in the infobox text, which is the only place where this is needed). Thankfully the article title has long ago been changed to "St." and does work fine, with no problems. Both versions are also in bold (appropriate for this usage of boldface) in the article opening, explaining both the use of "Saint" and "St". This should be sufficient.

Ironically, the official county seal can only be pulled up into the infobox with the word "Saint", but if you look inside of the seal itself, it says "St.". :-)

Demographics[edit]

The demographic section lists information for Somerset County, Maryland, not St. Mary's County. While I have changed some stats that I could find, I could not do the whole thing. Its a better idea to just add new ones. That person may never come back, or may not be back for years.

Depending on the addition, citations may be allowed up to one month later unless the addition to the article has no basis in fact. In any case, they have already been added.
