Talk:Spritsail

I have seen (in the Bowsprit article for one, and also here: http://www.greatgridlock.net/Sqrigg/galleon.html) the word "spritsail" used to refer to a square sail hanging from the bowsprit. Is this usage incorrect? If not, maybe it should be mentioned in this article, especially since the Bowsprit one links to it when talking about the square sails. tyler skarz 04:10, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that is correct, and those kinds of spritsails were omnipresent on sailing vessels from the first large galleons until the turn of the 19th century. Certainly more prominent in nautical history than spritsail covered here, which is just a small boat rig. stanliffs[edit]

since searching stanliffs gets a single page of hits: all of which lead to this page; pages that have plagiarised this one; or pages containing a similar family name, maybe changing the text to "stanliffs (standing lifts)" would be of more use to researchers seeking to delve a little deeper?

by contrast searching "fo'c'sle" returns as many, and identical hits as searching forecastle
