Untitled[edit]

The fire service in Spring Valley has been volunteer for nearly the last one hundred fifty years. In 1861 the Columbian Fire Engine company #1 was formed by people who were trying to avoid the draft instituted by President Lincoln in 1860. Today the department is comprised of two additional companies (Rockland Hook and Ladder and the Spring Valley Hook and Ladder). The department is the busiest fire department in Rockland county and logs more than 1,000 fire calls in a year.
