Untitled[edit]

I object to Spearguns being classified as a firearm. While they can be used as weapons, they are not firearms as currently defined by the Wikipedia article on Firearms i.e "A firearm is a device that can be used as a weapon that fires either single or multiple projectiles propelled at high velocity by the gases produced through rapid, confined burning of a propellant. " I know of no such speargun using this method of propulsion, the vast majrity being powered by tensioned rubber or the expansion of compressed gas. In addition, while there could be or may have once been an experimental speargun using "rapid, confined burning of a propellant" it hardly warrants classifying the speargun with a term rife with connotations of war and criminal behaviour instead of as a respectable item of sports equipment, Yes, a speargun can be used as weapon, but so can a tennis racquet in the wrong hands. Could it be that someone has conflated the "speargun" with the "bangstick," a somewhat different underwater weapon using a pistol cartridge at contact distance as a defensive weapon against sharks? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.41.40.21 (talk) 18:36, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

re: note re sources. This article has been split from its original home as part of the spearfishing article. When it was included in that article it was referenced, but these references were not copied over to this new article. In particular I used parts of the Len Jones and Terry Maas books for the sections I wrote, but I can't speak for other contributors. Yugyug 04:19, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article would benefit from diagrams/pictures. It is hard to visualise the equipment purely from verbal descriptions. 212.50.184.130 (talk) 15:02, 3 August 2011 (UTC)steve[reply]
