the 8th reference can be taken out[edit]

because it said something like "athlete1 and athlete2 will represent spain at..." when the results are there, not needed anymore. Wikitestor (talk) 22:07, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm modifying athletics, dont touch it even if its not finished[edit]

I've a problem with the ranks:

Imagine this:

On the first round of some discipline, there are 4 heats, and the first 2 of each one qualify to the final and the 3rd and 4th to the semifinal.

Imagine now someone gets 3rd in one heat (QS). He has rank 3th or he has the rank accordingly to the table overall? (all the heats mixed). If its this last, we will need to wait till the games are over to have the completed list and put the ranks here. Wikitestor (talk) 12:50, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have been checking other countries, just 3 examples: Germany, Great Britain and USA. Nobody is following a rule, whether by country or by sport... sometimes overall rank, sometimes heat rank. I have just put Q or q where appropriate in my edits, left position out, awaiting for consensus REO1976 (talk) 22:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I've checking usa, china and some more and they've different rules, so I was doing exactly that, putting Q or q depending on the qualifying type. But I think TOTAL HEAT RANK should be used, this means, if it was 3th on his heat, he may be 3th, 5th or 18th. Wikitestor (talk) 23:01, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using total heat rank for everything since now on (Used on all swimming section and soon on athletism). Wikitestor (talk) 00:14, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So am I. Edited Men's athletics, completed all ranks to date. By the way, using as source http://www.iaaf.org/oly08/results/eventCode=3659/bydiscipline/disctype=4/index.html REO1976 (talk) 01:16, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WOW, GREAT SOURCE, thanks. To get the swimming ranks I counted between heats.... -.- 81.184.38.21 (talk) 01:57, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah wrong, here u've to count between heats too :(, but at least the info is there. 81.184.38.21 (talk) 02:01, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why LOW priority instead of MID?[edit]

Argentina is a lot more incomplete and worse and has MID... Wikitestor (talk) 18:05, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

problems allocating the "by genre" table.[edit]

I don't know how to put the "medals by genre" table UNDER the "medals by day" one, so the three tables would fit PERFECT. I've trying aligning it right all times in different positions but it does not work, help me please :P Wikitestor (talk) 20:46, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Screenie of what I mean: http://xs230.xs.to/xs230/08344/wikiprob380.jpg —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikitestor (talkcontribs) 20:51, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about appending "medals by genre" to "medals by day"? I have tried to do it, but my editing skills are very limited, I'm very newbie ;) The idea would be "medals by day" on top, then one (or several) blank line(s) (is it technically possible without borders?) and then "medals by genre" at the bottom. If the "borderless" line is not possible, then it isn't very elegant though REO1976 (talk) 21:23, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, it may be possible putting a lot of white/invisible lines with no data maybe, im gonna try. ty! 81.184.38.21 (talk) 22:54, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Impossible, I can't make it... Wikitestor (talk) 17:10, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heat Ranks[edit]

The convention for the rank in track athletic events is to record the position in the heat, this is different than for e.g. swimming or field events where the overall rank (vs all heats) is given. This is because qualifiers for the next round are decided differently in the two sports. In swimming qualifing competitors are decided only on a time basis, so if, e.g., heat 1 is is faster than heat 2 it is possible that all the competitors from heat 1 and none from heat 2 would get through to the next round. However in track athletics qualifiers for the next round are decided by the first X athletes in each heat getting through, i.e. at least X athletes from every heat will get into the next round. Therefore the results for track athletics events in this article need to be changed to record the position of the athlete in their heat only. Not true at all. Thats why we use the Q and the q . You can see someone ranked 18th that didn't qualify and someone with rank 21th Q, and logic gives why. It has no sense at all. 81.184.38.42 (talk) 20:40, 31 August 2008 (UTC
Yes it is true. That is the case at the moment because the ranks are written incorrectly'. If the rank within the heat only is given for athletics it would be seen that Q means that they qualified in the first 1,2 or 3 positions and that q means qualification as a "fastest loser", i.e. with a time fastest of those not already qualified (this doesn't exist for all events however).
