Schnapps[edit]

doesn't the existence of this article depend on "snaps" and "schnapps" being different things? Schnapps is a foreign word that has been borrowed into English, but "snaps" has not been: snaps is not a word in English. Sure, the Scandinavian Germanic people might have different traditions than the German Germanic people, but ...

My relatives in Denmark spell it 'snaps', but pronounce it 'schnapps'. Ascholer 01:22, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Swedish it's pronounced as "snapps" and not "schnapps" and I'm pretty sure the same is the case for Norwegian and most Danes therefore I'm now gonna write that it's pronounced as snapps and not shnapps or whatever as it says right now./Swedish guy

Moist?[edit]

Happy, inebriated, loose, and jovial would probably all suffice as appropriate synonyms (as well as of course drunken). Although, drunken is perhaps most dead-on, it lacks a little in the subtilty of "moist" But I agree, "moist" is not acceptable use of English. Sfdan 9 July 2005 15:24 (UTC)

Tak, Sfdan. A couple of correspondingly not-too-over-the-top euphemisms in English (British English, at least) are "merry" and "tipsy". I'll try to incorporate them. -- Picapica (PS - In my experience, if you want to gå ud efter øl in Denmark, you'd better go first to the bank, or to Germany. Or have prices got any more reasonable lately in DK?)

Hej Picapica-- Contrary to rumours, prices on beer (øl) and spirits (spiritus) have been going down statistically in Denmark, and is cheaper than ever. But there has certainly been an old tradition for certain "thirsty" individuals to go all the way to Germany for cheaper beer (especially in southern Jutland), or go to Denmark to buy a cheaper beer from, for example, Malmö. Personally I don't drink much beer so I don't really notice this sort of thing, but I have asked around a bit. So come to Denmark for your next beer— its very likely cheaper than buying it in one of the other Scandinavian lands. ;-) Sfdan 14:30, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons for not brewing your own[edit]

it is very limited as it is difficult for the home distiller to achieve the same very high quality of commercial snaps

Actually, most people don't care about the quality, they want cheap alcohol. The strongest reason for the low rate of home-brewing is that it is illegal, and that the laws are pretty well enforced. That's why it's more common in the North, because the police don't have the resources to stop it, and because the acceptance of the law is lower. Several issues with this article[edit]

I am a Dane, but never heard of snapsvisor. I think that is some Swedish tradition. Snaps in Denmark, will not always be akvavit. Akvavit contains caraway as main spice.
