Removing Stub Status[edit]

Since this article is a stub, I plan on adding four sections to get this article jump-started: the context from which slum upgrading arises (which is in essence a short summary of slums in general) followed by a definition, a brief history of the concept of slum upgrading and how it has been used in the world, an overview of the major criticisms to slum upgrading and lastly, a couple of alternatives that have been popularized other than slum upgrading in various countries. Removing misleading status[edit]

The contributors of this article seemed to have completely missed the point of the article. Sentences like "The concept of slum upgrading is to remove slums altogether by demolition undertaken by government or other organisations and companies" seriously worry me; that's just what slum clearance is! We're talking about paternalistic urban policy in the Global South here that will directly harm hundreds of millions of people if it's proliferated. Alternatives to that deserve to be expressed and understood.

I'm not incredibly well-read on the topic, but I have been interested in it since picking up Arrival City by Doug Saunders, and reading an article from the founders of urbz.net, discussing similar themes of economic success via incrementalism and integration. [1]

I think we should start from that understanding and build this into an article whose thesis is actually related to its title. Many of the sources here are already really helpful, but the interpretation of them is almost diametrically wrong. Bismvth (talk) 23:11, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
