Proposed move[edit]

The same convention ought to apply here as with Novo Mesto. In other words the article should be moved to Slovenske Gorice. I would also dispute the statement that it is sometimes translated as "Slovenian wineyards". Perhaps you mean mistranslated? Rabascius (talk) 02:57, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree with "Slovene Hills" as a natural solution. Some similar examples (both countries and regions): North German Plain (= Norddeutsches Tiefland), Bavarian Alps (= Bayerische Alpen), Bohemian Massif (= Česká vysočina), Silesian Upland (= Wyżyna Śląska), Belarusian Ridge (= Белорусская гряда). Ok. What about the names of settlements, like Sv. Ana v Slov. goricah. Should this one be Sv. Ana in the Slov. Hills, Saint Anne in the Slovene Hills, or Sv. Ana v Slov. Goricah? --Eleassar ^{my talk} 11:07, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the official Slovene name is Sv. Ana v Slov. goricah then I would write "Sv. Ana v Slov. Goricah" (i.e., no translation, only standard orthographic modification) in English. Although "Sv." and "Slov." (and "Zg.," "Spod.," "Dol.," etc., if they occur) may not be the most useful way to represent such names in an English encyclopedia article (because they rapidly lose transparency and pronouncability, as though writing "Ft. Lauderdale" or "Hwy 401" in a Slovene text), this does seem to agree with parallel English practice; for example: St. Louis, St Andrews, etc. Another option (probably preferable for an English encyclopedia, in which non-foreign abbreviations are completely opaque) would be to keep the name in full for the title and have the lede read: "Sveta Ana v Slovenskih Goricah (Slovene: Sv. Ana v Slov. goricah) is ...." Either way, the abbreviation needs to be expanded somewhere for non-Slovene readers. Doremo (talk) 12:57, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I plan to put these articles back to the full title, because a discussion in the Slovene Wikipedia has shown that both names are official and per this article (as well as by a prominent Slovene geographer, who has sent us an e-mail), the full name is recommended. I also agree with your opinion that the preferable option for the English Wikipedia are the names in full. Name[edit]

Why is this titled Slovene Hills instead of Slovenske Gorice? Toponyms are usually not translated into English unless there is a well-established precedent to the contrary. -104.153.228.206 (talk) 07:28, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
