Name origin:[edit]

I'll admit that I don't know the slightest thing about the slocal valley, the okanagan people, or the Sinixt, but this website (not by any means an authority) says the name slocan comes from an "Okanagan First Nation" word. Do we have a source that it's actually Sinixt? - TheMightyQuill (talk) 20:26, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BritishColumbia.com is a commercial website with material written by temps gleaning stuff from other websites, or going by say-so; BC aboriginal maps often also don't show Sinixt territory so it's easy enough to look at the Slocan, see it's part of the Okanagan claim, and presume that would be the language the name is from. BritishColumbia.com has also described Tulameen as being in the Okanagan and is NOT a credible source, or any kind of reliable one.Skookum1 (talk) 23:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As for a source that says it's Sinixt, I think there's something online; maybe a community website or on the Sinixt page. I just got in, I'll look around; I'm in regular contact with someone in Winlaw so if need be I'll ask him to roust something up. Mind you the Wc2 and Sierra club maintain Gold Bridge and Tyaughton Lake are in the Chilcotin, and that's not correct either; rather a different issue but somerwhat the same context/origin - someone reading a brochurized account of something and then rebrochurizing it after adding a slogan or two, or an artificial meaning like the "snow-eater" myth about the name of the Chinook wind. Come to think of it I might as well create Sinixt language/Sinixt'sn as it's needed; as said before "build it and they will come" - if I establish the stub, some linguist is going to come along and fill in the blanks; somebody's been doing a good job south of the line in this same region, accounting for peoples and languages that weren't listed before but just all consolidated/redirected to the Colville Tribes; which is also where the Sinixt is; so on one of those pages there'll be somebody who can tell me if Sinixt'sn is the correct form; if I can't be sure I'll use Sinixt language. Their corresponding government article, and community article, is the Colville Tribes/Agency although I think they may have a special office because of the particulars of their negotiations for reestablishment in Canada; it may be because that's run through Colville, where Okanagans predominate far over the few remaining Sinixt, that some confusiong about the word/language arose.Skookum1 (talk) 23:21, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
