References to the short film[edit]

I removed passages that referred to the short film of the same name and called this feature film an adaptation of it. It is not. Yes, the two films have the same director and title and both are about a white supremacist with facial tattoos but otherwise are not related. The feature film is based on true events involving Byron Widner, while the short film is a fictional story about a man named Johnny Aldd. This article (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/oscar-nominated-shorts-2019-live-action-1184345) from The Hollywood Reporter says, while discussing the 2019 Oscar-nominated live-action short films, "The sole American production in this category, by Israeli director Guy Nattiv, is Skin — not to be confused with a thematically related feature-length film titled Skin, which Nattiv also released last year." Move to Skin (2019 film) - Yes, I know WP:NCFILM says to use the year of first presentation (including festivals), but I think this will be more WP:RECOGNIZABLE if we name it based on its worldwide release date. All of the usual methods of extra disambiguation (year, country, director) are not viable in this case. Move to any title accepted by consensus. This is a deeply unusual case where all of our established rules fail, because it's nearly unprecedented for one director to release two different films with the same title in the same year which aren't handcuffed together as straight-up versions of each other. The only remotely similar examples to this I can think of at all are cases where a director made a short film and then went on to release a longer feature film version of the same story a couple of years later, such that both versions can be addressed in the same article (or simply disambiguated by the normal year-of-release method if separate articles are actually justified) — if there's ever been a situation that was fully equivalent to this, with two identically titled films telling completely different stories being released by the same director at the same time, I have no knowledge of it whatsoever. One option would be to break the "year of first presentation" rule here per Netoholic, using the year of commercial release instead because of the special circumstances, while the other option would be to riff on their lengths, dabbing this as "2018 feature film" since the other one is "2018 short film". I have a slight preference for the "feature" option, personally, but not strongly enough that I'd be inclined to argue if consensus leans toward the "2019" option instead. And, of course, "the hatnote is enough" remains on the menu as an option — it's not ideal, because as of last night the short film is now the more notable of the two, but it still technically gets the job done. But no matter what we do, this is a special case where we simply have to accept a title that's going to break our regular rules for film dabbing one way or another, because none of our regular rules work at all.
