Ski Troops[edit]

It can be added that Finnish troops used skiing in their war raids against the enemy since the 500 AD. Most of these raids were made during winter time and the average soldier was able to ski about 15 - 20 kilometres in one hour. Typical day ski march was about 50 km. One of the most notable ski march was made in the war against the Muscovites in 1581 when the Finnish troops of 3.500 soldiers skied across the Gulf of Finland under the command of Pontus de la Gardie from Viipuri to Ingermanland and took the Muscovite main positions Narva and Rakvere from the rear.

This is just one example. There are hundreds of such actions made by the Finns. It should be also noted that the Russians used mainly Finno Ugrian ski troops collected from Karelians, Vepsäs, Ingermanlanders, Vatjas, Komis, and Komi Permjaks when coquered the native tribes in Siberia.

I also believe that older examples should be mentioned. The oldest mentioned examples are the napoleonic wars. This gives the impression that skis weren't used before or were not important, which is definitely not the case. The journal of the (British) Royal United Services Institute published an article about "War on Skis". It might be worth to cover some of the examples because it might give a better understanding about the history of this topic. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
