independent Manchester United Supporters Club[edit]

Indeed there was such a thing until 1987. That year, the club took charge of the supporters' club, at which time it ceased to be the "independent Manchester United Supporters' Club" and simply became the "Manchester United Supporters' Club", later known as "One United". – Pee Jay 23:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete?[edit]

Is this list incomplete? I have a source that says that Willie Morgan won the supporters player of the year in 1970; was this a different award?

It was a different award. Before 1987 (when the official supporters club was established), the award was run by the independent Manchester United Supporter's Club mentioned above, which was therefore an unofficial award. – Pee Jay 16:57, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Duh! I remember thinking this last time I asked this question above. Sorry! In that case, if sources can be found, would it be appropriate to create a separate article for that award, or merge it with this article?

I don't think I've ever seen any sources for a full list of pre-1987 winners – the only one I know about is Willie Morgan in 1970 – so I don't know if it would even be possible to create a separate article for the pre-1987 award. – Pee Jay 17:22, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The award was previously called 'Manchester United Supporters' Club Player of the Year' 1971-1985 and then 'Sharp Manchester United Player of the Year' 1985-1987 before 'Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year'. It would make more sense if the article was called 'Manchester United Player of the Year Award' with each of the winners listed under the relevant name of the award for that era;

Manchester United Supporters' Club Player of the Year
Sharp Manchester United Player of the Year
Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year

Table[edit]

I won't restore my edits again, to avoid violating WP:3RR - but I would like to outline the reasons why I made the changes I did and why I think my version is superior to the current version, as reverted to by PeeJay2K3.

Having 6 columns is totally unnecessary. The season, name and position are obviously necessary, but I can figure out no reason for the references column - the most obviously valid place for the references is in the name column, not a separate column.

The nationality column is also superfluous - every single good list of footballers on Wikipedia lists them with flags before the names, not written out nationalities. It has been suggested that this is preferable for sorting by nationality, but I fail to see why that would be necessary - there is a separate table below outlining wins by nationality, plus the table is small enough to work out who is from where anyway.

The notes column is also ridiculous. It is obvious from the first appearance of the English flag (whether that be before the name or in a separate column), who is the first English recipient - and from the number of times they appear in the table, it is obvious how many times each recipient has won the award (it's outlined in the opening paragraph too, anyway). Furthermore, outlining facts such as the first non-European recipient is totally unnecessary - anyone concerned enough to want to know this fact (which is totally irrelevant to the subject at hand) can not only find it out easily through researching the nationalities presented, they likely already knows their geography well enough to work it out. If you can't work out who the first English recipient is, I doubt your the sort of person who cares.

I can live with the Notes column being removed, but if you delete the Nationality column, I believe the table loses a useful function. Just because other tables indicate nationality with a flag next to the player's name doesn't mean this one has to.
