Atheist Label[edit]

Why does Blackburn have the "atheist" label before his name? Is this something that Blackburn emphasizes about himself? I'm sure that there are several atheist mathematicians and scientists, but we don't begin their Wikipedia articles by saying things like "Godel was an athiest mathematician" unless that label has some kind of significance to the way they portrayed themselves. As far as I know, Blackburn is not an outspoken atheist. So discussion of his atheism may best be left to a new section in his article titled something like Religious Views. As it is, this label seems like flamebait from someone religious or ammunition from someone who is an atheist. Either way, it makes a much bigger deal out of Blackburn's atheism than Blackburn himself does. Clan-destine (talk) 00:36, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was surprised by this label too. I know Simon quite well as he was my philosophy tutor. Probably around 95% of philosophers in Anglo American universities are atheists so from that perspective the label doesn't make sense. Simon has been at the forefront of the British Humanist society and has written occasionally against teaching religion in school etc, but certainly hasn't been as prominent an atheist as Dawkins or Dennett. comment added by WadeLondon (talkcontribs) 16:37, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While we're talking about his atheism, it says: "he is an atheist with respect to the question of the existence of God." Is that like a triangle with three sides? Actually I'm going to change it, and that there can be my reason for changing it.
