Ethylene and Bananas in Taoist ritual in Taiwan[edit]
I have seen bananas positioned at the top part of large fruit collections in video footage of Taoist ritual performed in Taiwan. This position could presumably help ripen the fruit near the bananas for consumption or appearance, as bananas give off quite a bit of ethylene as they ripen - enough so that hanging them makes them last longer. This strongly suggests to me that there was a background cultural awareness of what western science would call a "gaseous plant hormone" in the culture of Taiwan's population. this article could probably be expanded if someone has access to any material about how Shang Fa Yang's home nation's various cultures have influenced scientific pursuits.Zaphraud (talk) 00:24, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
