Homonyms[edit]

Kōan may refer to:

Kōan (Kamakura period) (貞元), Japanese era from 1278 to 1288
Kōan (Muromachi period) (承元), Japanese era from 1361 to 1362

This set of nengō used to be identified as

Koan (first) (貞元), Japanese era from 1278 to 1288
Koan (second) (承元), Japanese era from 1361 to 1362

It was suggested that the period designations would be clearer; and the same pattern seemed useful in the cases of other homonym pairs in the list of Japanese era names:
