Merge proposal (2012)[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.
merge Schumann and Shuman

I oppose the proposed merge of Schumann and Shuman; the spellings are distinctive enough, and the first page is long enough, to justify keeping them separate. bd2412 T 01:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

SchumannSchumann (disambiguation)Robert Schumann is without any doubt the wp:PRIMARYTOPIC for Schumann. I would like to move the disambiguation page to this title in order to redirect “Schumann” to Robert Schumann. Regards, Zingarese (talk) 05:41, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Simplexity22 (talk) 06:50, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment regardless of whether this is moved or not, consideration should be given to splitting off a surname article, Schumann (surname) as that is quite long, and a better fit would be having a surname article to list the people. -- 65.94.40.190 (talk) 07:15, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural comment I reverted the move executed by AlexTheWhovian as a Technical request. I think it's controversial, and the RM has (AFAICT) already been opened, so let the discussion take its course, there is no rush. (I might opine later on the substance of the RM). • Support the proposal fully. Schumann should be a redirect to Robert, as Bach is to Johann Sebastian. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:51, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not opposed to making Robert Schumann primary topic for "Schumann" (though isn't Clara Schumann only marginally less prominent?), but he clearly isn't the primary topic for "Schuman", which should be split out in the event of a move. In doing so the title should be "Schumann (surname)" since this would no longer be a dab page, just a name list with some partial title matches that could probably just be removed. —Xezbeth (talk) 12:08, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • The asteroid is not a PTM. The asteroid is named "Schumann" (pointe finale; just the same as Vesta or Ceres, etc) and is registered as asteroid number 4003, and codenamed 1964 ED. It has several alternate names, including the form used for the article title "4003 Schumann", "Asteroid Schumann", "1964 ED Schumann", "4003 (1964 ED) Schumann", "(4003) Schumann", "(4003) 1964 ED (Schumann)" and several other accepted forms. Just like the planet Mars is "Sol IV" or "Planet Mars" etc in alternate designations, but "Mars" is also its full name. -- 65.94.40.190 (talk) 05:06, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support move and split of surnames from ambiguous topics. bd2412 T 14:51, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The only other person who comes close is his wife.Nohomersryan (talk) 14:59, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support that this title should be a redirect to Robert Schumann. However, the content of this page should be moved to Schumann (surname), getting rid of all the partial title matches; the asteroid can be put in the “see also” section. There would be no disambiguation page anymore, so delete the redirect titled Schumann (disambiguation). — Gorthian (talk) 23:20, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per surnames of top-tier composers such as Mozart, Beethoven or Tchaikovsky. Even the common surname Wagner redirects to Richard Wagner. As for Schuman, it is a different surname in the same manner as Brown and Browne or Reed, Read and Reid differ from one another and need to be disambiguated separarely as well as highlighted via hatnotes, such the one at Robert Schumann which points to French statesman Robert Schuman.    Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 03:54, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Indeed, clear primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:25, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Schuman is not German[edit]

Can we change the first sentence? Schumann is a German surname, but Schuman is not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:20, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have carried out the move requested, but I have not altered the Schuman redirect. No object if it is retargeted to Schumann (surname) or made into its own surname page with the Schumans from that list. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:34, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is solved, by no longer saying that Schuman is a German surname. Thank you. I expanded the composer a bit, - critic is too small ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:43, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
