Merge Request[edit]

Wikified Surrey School Board article and cleanup then realized this is a dup article, School district 36, British Columbia is the format used for other districts so this should be merged to that. Wakemp 19:22, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to List of school districts in British Columbia, there are only 4 school districts in that format. Vancouver School Board is another non-conformist. Wouldn't it be possible to include the name as well as the number. Something like British Columbia School District 36, Surrey? In British Columbia the standard nomenclature for School Districts is School District No. XXX (NAME) so it would be helpful if the entries followed the same pattern. Wakemp 16:33, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Kelowna opinion thrown in for good measure: make the article name reflect what people will most likely look up when they turn to the encyclopedia. Are people likely to search for "school district ###", or are they more likely to search for "<name> school board"? Coming from outside the affected/disputed area, I know my first search criteria would probably be "surrey school board", the same way I'd also search for "vancouver school board". Having said that, this may be my Ontario roots showing since back in Ontario the school boards use names like Durham District School Board, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Toronto District School Board, etc... --Stephane Charette 21:28, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the case of this entry the title would be Surrey School District (the common name) or School District #36 Surrey (the legal name). Either would be acceptable but we will run into a problem when we do this for other districts, like Kelowna, where the name is actually School District #23 Central Okanagan. The name Kelowna School District would not have any relation to the name of the district other than talking about the largest populated centre in the district. So this seems to be something to be discussed on a bigger scale such as Talk:List of school districts in British Columbia Wakemp 01:03, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of schools[edit]

The list of schools looks really long. Maybe dividing them into neighbourhoods might be more useful? i.e. into Cloverdale, Whalley, Newton, etc. -→Buchanan-Hermit™/!? 03:14, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My preference would be a footer, like the one for Vancouver, versus the infobox in SD 5. The footer can then be re-used for each individual school, while the infobox cannot. I was refering to Template:VancouverSchools, Surrey needs one of these. New Style School list[edit]

I've added the footer box (template) for the schools as well as reformatting the main school list. The question remains whether both are required but I think this is a much better presentation than before. Wakemp 01:13, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. I removed the redundant "Secondary School" and "Elementary School" from the navbox (easy with Emacs) and corrected a few typos. I also removed the two categories (infobox and parserFunctions). We don't need both the navbox and the list. -- Usgnus
Should we title the navboxes with Schools in School District 36 Surrey instead of Schools in Surrey, British Columbia?

Schools with own articles[edit]

Hey folks, Schools do NOT deserve their own WP article simply by virtue of existing. This clearly fails the notability test. If you are going to create an article about a school, it needs to have some substance in it of note. There has to be something special about it, and a good way to test this is to see if it is mentioned in a major news source. You will get little support for this approach. Numerous AfDs have shown that secondary schools can be sourced to meet WP:N. Elementary/middle schools are the opposite; in their case few meet the standard. The way forward is to source and expand the secondary school pages not delete them. Improper Merger[edit]

The merge of Discovery Elementary School was improperly performed. I therefore request a correction be made or that the merge be undone. Please add the "notable" postal code to this article. It was available in the main article but is no longer available. The removal of this important information is frustrating not only for Wikipedia but for Google maps users. I came upon this information via google maps search in that area. The current format of this article School District 36 Surrey (the one it was merged too), makes it difficult to add content. I don't understand what exactly you want added. What is notable about the postal code? I don't see any mention of it in the previous article. There is a "Notes" section to add some content and extra rows could be added for more expansion of individual entries. Branding[edit]

I am in the communication services department for the Surrey School District and one of the department's roles is use of brand and logo. The district developed a new logo in 2011 and I'd like to replace the old logo, which was removed last week, with the new one in the information box at top right. @Totoro33: The importance is to determine which languages are high priority for the subject. Articles about school districts in Canada and the US should be created on non-English Wikipedias. Knowing which ones to target is important. I sent a user on the Punjabi Wikipedia to create a version of this article in Punjabi: pa:ਵਰਤੋਂਕਾਰ ਗੱਲ-ਬਾਤ:Babanwalia#Article request for Punjabi: School District 36 Surrey (largest school district in British Columbia, and in largest Punjabi community of BC) – I tend to create the stub article myself if it is Spanish, French, or Chinese, but for other languages I must ask somebody.
