Silver Sox to Saskatchewan and back in the GBL?[edit]

I would like to know if any in Saskatchewan would like to see the Golden Baseball League come to your province either in Regina or Saskatoon. Given what I just read about the origin of the team name, which may be different than Nevada, I think the Silver Sox name and franchise history should be absorbed by the new franchise, if the Saskatchewan Silver Sox (currently in the Arizona Winter League) be placed on the team. I'd like some feedback. Ccwstandard (talk) 04:11, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While it is interesting that the league decided to call this team Saskatchewan, it has little or no relationship to the province. Living here in Saskatoon I'd like to see pro baseball back, but I think I am the only one. The stadiums in both Saskatoon and Regina need at least $1,000,000 in renovations to even make them usable. That coupled with the fact that pro baseball has failed miserably several times, will likely mean that unless the GBL owns the teams themselves (a bad move in any case), there will not be an owner who would be interested. The league looked at Saskatoon after the 2007 season and met with the Mayor and the city, what came out of that meeting is that no one was interested in owning the team nor was the city interested in putting any money into Cairns Field. In Regina's case, the owners of their WHL team, were interested in owning a GBL team, but instead of putting it in Regina, they chose to put it in Victoria. A telling comment on the viability of pro baseball in Regina.
Also, the Silver Sox name had nothing to do with the Trappers moving anywhere. The GBL owned the trademark through the Reno franchise and therefore reused the name for this "franchise." As well, this team "is not based in the province of Saskatchewan." If it were not for the website Oursportscentral.com I would not even know this team existed. The local media did not even mention it in passing, which could be as a result of the lack of Saskatchewan talent upon this team. As for the "being support by throngs of wintering Saskatchewan residents" I'd say that is wrong. Based on all information coming out of Arizona regarding the league, unless throngs involve less than 100 people (which is what attendance was routinely made up of), that sentence needs to go. I did take the liberty of removing that part about the Trappers moving to Utah (which was false, as they moved to Round Rock, Texas and became the Round Rock Express, never once calling themselves the Trappers after moving from Edmonton), simply to put proper information in this article. I'd also vote that the entire origin of nickname section be deleted, as it simply is a trademark issue. The team was named as such because the GBL owned the trademark to the logo and nickname from their Reno franchise. It was not picked due to some local reason, in fact most people in Saskatchewan wouldn't even put Silver on the list of products mined in the province. Silver would fall somewhere near Tungsten, well below Uranium, Diamonds, Potash, Coal etc. etc. I'd honestly suggest that this article be overhauled and actually contain 100% correct information. I also noticed that a dubious mention had been added to this page. It was added that Saskatchewan averaged 1,200 per game during the AWL season. If you click the link that is not a full season stat, it is based on one game. This is like saying the 2004 Montreal Expos averaged 40,000 per game because they attracted that to their finale. I'm of the opinion that while this is mentioned on Howe Sports Data, it is a misleading stat. Shootmaster 44 (talk) 07:34, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
