Move proposal[edit]

Would there be any objections if this article were to be moved to it's current scientific name? According to the taxonomy available through ITIS, which has been applied to the rest of this series, the name it should then be moved to is Boa manditra. --Jwinius (talk) 18:03, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two species of Madagascar snake were given the species epithet madagascariensis by André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron in 1844 — Pelophilus madagascariensis and Xiphosoma madagascariensis. George Albert Boulenger moved the former to the genus Boa in 1893, giving it the name Boa madagascariensis. This meant that when Kluge moved Xiphosoma madagascariensis to the genus Boa in 1991, the name Boa madagascariensis was invalid — a junior secondary homonym. So Kluge gave the species the replacement name Boa manditra.

As someone who didn't know much about zoology who surfed into the article doing research, the sudden reference to "Kluge" confused me. The paragraph seemed to me to mention Kluge out of nowhere without any reference anywhere else in the article (and a wikipedia search for Kluge was unhelpful.) Why Boa manditra?[edit]

The reclassification of this species to belong in the genus Boa has been extremely controversial, and was rejected by Frank Glaw and Miguel Vences in A fieldguide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Madagascar, described as an "unjustified replacement name". Does anyone have further explanation as to why it is here listed as Boa manditra and not Sanzinia sp. if the leading experts on Malagasy herpetology are rejecting this reclassification? - Mark.scherz (talk) 12:15, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
