Bogus info on 1979 Assembly action[edit]

The Wisconsin State Assembly did not pass a bill banning same-sex marriage in 1979. The cited source for this info is a tweet retweeted on a blog. This is not a reliable source. Two scholarly, highly reputable sources on gay rights and same-sex marriage in Wisconsin ([1], [2]) fail to mention any such bill and no other source on the web can be found to support that baseless accusation. There's no reason for outrage. It's not a "baseless accusation". It's a mistake.

In 1997, not 1979, a "statutory endorsement of traditional marriage" did pass the Assembly on a 78 to 20 vote, with only one Republican in opposition. Seems that some Republicans in the WI Assembly prevented it from getting out of committee the next year. Check out this snippet view from Google books showing something produced by the Family Research Institute:

I don't see anything there supporting the statement that "In 1979, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a bill banning same-sex marriage" or even "In 1997, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a bill banning same-sex marriage". What's a "statutory endorsement of traditional marriage"? Is it a ban on same-sex marriage? That would be a leap of interpretation.
