Untitled[edit]

The castle is ruined, but it is not its keep that remains, but the basement. In the tudor times a law was passed that commanded everyone to look after the road infront of their house. So, inevitably, they used earth from the hill surrounding saffron walden castle to repair them. This then shrunk the hill, leaving the basement to remain. --Nukethewales 21:18, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The Gibson twins invented the cheese triangle, on which they based their business. A cheese triangle factory is still in operation in Shire Hill Industrial Estate, operating under the name Gibson Cheese and Dairy Products Ltd."

I have honestly never heard this rumour, and also haven't heard of the company. I have lived in Saffron Walden for 22 years, and thought it might have come up by now. There is nothing to back this up, and I think it's just a well worded piece of vandelism. Please feel free to proove me wrong but I can't imagine that we invented cheese triangles when we don't have a dairy industry, the Gibsons were brewers and bankers, and lived in a time before electricity and tin foil... Also were there Gibson twins?

......

Thats Walden Dairy....not a cheese triangle factory... --GeologyTom 14:15, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Napoleonic Era Military bases?[edit]

Aloha,

Is there any information about the areas military role during the 1800s? Thanks. Gecko G 20:07, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--For my purposes I'll say never mind anymore. For the purpose I originally asked about this, I found out that references to Saffron Walden were actually in error therefore I will be taking this page off my watchlist. As a general Wikipedia user, I would still suggest than any such info could inhance this article. Farewell, Gecko G (talk) 02:55, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Walden Local - Newspapers[edit]

Is this entry entirely acceptable? Can a free, delivered newpaper be said to be very popular? If this was measured with a comparison to the Reporter and other area newpapers perhaps this would be more credible? Also listing every place it is delivered to is not that interesting, perhaps giving a distance from Saffron Walden, or jsut some examples.

Due to it's rather singular nature I would suggest this was written by Walden Local staff....?

Sites and buildings of interest[edit]

The lead-in to this section appears to missing something. As it reads, the reader can't be sure which site is being addressed.SBmeier (talk) 20:56, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everyone. I included the bit on HDT, because I thought it was important, and more important than saffron walden being mentioned in, say, runnersworld, of all magazines. I hope you agree, and don't see is as insignificant. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leopold123 (talkcontribs) 18:16, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changes and additions[edit]

I have made substantial changes to this page and believe it still needs further expansion and help from other editors. I began by trying to fix some of the citation issues – certainly not perfect but improved now with further work needed. Banner has come off the top and citation needed flags are now placed on unsourced sections/sentences. I have also reordered and expanded. Major changes are:

  • Beginning a new section Culture – now housing Audley End, Fry Art Gallery and with addition of Saffron Walden Museum and Saffron Hall. Sport now comes under this as a subhead and has also been expanded and better sourced.
  • Revising and dividing the history – previously poorly sourced with a non existent link to Saffron Walden Museum but would benefit from a historian's eye and better sourcing.
  • Adding a paragraph covering all the churches – just mentioning St Mary's was unbalanced. Note also that St Mary the Virgin was described as largest in Essex but I can't find a good source for this (church is a self source) so have flagged up as needing a citation. Pevsner says one of the largest in the Essex guide.
  • Cutting down the overly long section on coat of arms and maces. Quite interesting but out of scale.
  • Reducing the section on politics and changing header to Governance. Adding a subhead on Education which previously wasn't mentioned at all – could this be longer?
  • Removing second image of turf maze – seems odd to have two pictures and perhaps it would be better to have a separate page on this if it's that important. Adding some other images although I think these could be improved...spacings also if anyone can help!

The page doesn't have anything on geography and climate – typical in other pages, such as Bury St Edmunds. Economy/industry is poorly described and seems to stop in the 1970s so should be improved upon. Something on recent and ongoing developments possibly also relevant if it can be managed with neutrality in mind. Libby norman (talk) 16:39, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
