Scottish Premier League should be top given that, of the two articles above it, one doesn't even have a Wikipedia article and the other refers to a now disused airport code. Additionally, of the three, the Scottish Premier League would be the most looked at page (it would be rather hard to look at the top article seeing as it doesn't exist. 86.132.239.136 (talk) 13:48, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is customary to actually 'Talk' about something before making the edit. 1 minute doesn't give that long!

As per your reasoning, I have moved the 'Scottish Premier League' to position 2. Typing SPL into Google and other major search engines yields 'Standard PHP Library' earlier than 'Scottish Premier League' (although the top 6 results aren't in the disambig)

Maybe there's some regional variation at play here, but when I type "SPL" into google.com the first link is the Scottish Premier League website. Blankfrackis (talk) 03:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I don't think this is a foolproof method to decide what should come first in the list. There are websites where the "SPL" might stem from the domain name and have very little to do with the actual subject. The Seattle Public Library, for instance, is one of the top hits on google due to its url (www.spl.lib.wa.us) but I would imagine this abbreviation isn't used a great deal in general discourse and that few people arrive at the library's wikipedia page from typing in "SPL". In contrast, the Scottish Premier League is almost exclusively referred to as "the SPL". Blankfrackis (talk) 03:30, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I think Google tries to be clever about what country your IP is from and the region of your browser. Wikipedia guidence is not exactly clear. The original disambig was (mainly) alphabetic, which I thought was ok becuase research wasn't required. Unless you know some way of getting 'Click Stats' from Wikipedia somehow I don't know what to suggest.

Acronym[edit]

'SPL' is not an acronym as the individual letters do not form a new word (Oxford English Dictionary definition). In the same way that the BBC is not an acronym (as it is not pronounced 'bibic'), SPL is an initialistation, i.e., initials of other words. •Oranje•·Talk 12:46, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking up similar disambig's they are described as TLA's. Although a possible error somewhere else should not be compounded, calling it an initialism, is more incorrect (in my opinion). SPL is not a initialism of Schiphol.
And even initialisms are covered under the acronyms page on this site Wikipedia Definition
ps. The Oxford dictionary link doesn't work - it's a pay site :-(

Standard PHP Library[edit]

The term "standard PHP library" does not appear anywhere in Wikipedia at this moment. Therefore, it should not appear on this page. The purpose of this disambiguation page is not to list the most popular uses of a term as determined by Google. The purpose of this page is to disambiguate (distinguish) between similarly named articles or topics in Wikipedia. If you would like to add some information about "standard PHP library" to a WP article, including the use of "SPL" as its abbreviation, you may use your Google hits to verify and provide citations for that information in that article. Then, it can be included here. Right now, there is NO article in Wikipedia that even uses the term "standard PHP library", much less the term "SPL" as its abbreviation. When that changes, please feel free to make the entry. SlackerMom (talk) 19:37, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My hat is still on. It turns out that an article named Standard PHP Library had been deleted a few months ago, so I re-created it as a redirect to PHP, which now contains your newly-added information. Makes a nice-looking link on this page now. SlackerMom (talk) 21:05, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
;-) That's fair enough! Thanks. --Rcalvert (talk) 09:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
