Explosion?[edit]

What sort of "spontaneous internal explosion" destroyed the Karlsruhe? Is anything else known about the incident? Peter Bell (talk) 07:01, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are a range of possibilities, but there hasn't been an investigation into the cause (as far as I'm aware - this is in part due to the fact that the wreck is too deep to dive). It was likely a magazine explosion. These were fairly common during the period - for example, HMS Natal was destroyed by one in 1915 and the Chilean battleship Capitán Prat was nearly destroyed by one in 1916. There were many others.
