Phony reference to real "source" for content. - Saint Kohser (talk) 10:51, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Per this link, it appears that Albert E.H. Johnson was indeed Stanton's "private secretary". So sure, it's quite possible that he opened and read Lincoln's letter; that's what private secretaries do. But who actually addresses a letter intended for a public official to the clerks who open their mail? I don't see any item for this man in our Albert Johnson disambiguation page. The text actually says, "provided a note", implying that it was perhaps not sealed in an envelope, and hand-delivered, rather than mailed? Wbm1058 (talk) 15:57, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the index here, I see several statements attributed to "Major A. E. H. Johnson, Stanton's confidential clerk".
On page 286, I read that "On April 26, Booth was shot by Boston Corbett while resisting arrest". – Wbm1058 (talk) 16:29, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
