3rd Symphony Recordings[edit]

The first paragraph says the third symphony has been little recorded or performed since its peak popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. With at least 6 separate performances currently available on CDs, surely this mild slap should be deleted.

I completely agree. The Third is by far the most famous thing Harris wrote and is still easily available. Here [1] are notes for a recent performance by the Cleveland orchestra. Antandrus (talk) 17:49, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget the recent Naxos recording, too, and the not-so-recent Chandos recording, either. Anton Mravcek 23:36, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Harris optimistic?[edit]

Although the music of Harris and Copland shares stylistic traits that we identify as American, I find Harris's style to be distinctly darker and starker in mood. Wikipedia's article on Edward Hopper insightfully contrasts him with Norman Rockwell. The same kind of contrast applies to Harris and Copland respectively. Harris record albums could well be adorned with Hopper paintings.

Articles on Roy Harris' Symphonies to look at?[edit]

Tempo published two articles written by Malcolm D. Robertson on Harris' symphonies back in Dec. 1998 (Symphony 1933 - sym. 6, pp 9-14, stable URL) and Oct. 2000 (Symphony for Band and symphony no. 7 through symphony no. 13 Bicentennial Symphony, pp 20-27, [2]).Schissel | Sound the Note! 16:19, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Children?[edit]

Re: "The couple [Roy and Johana Harris] had two sons, Shaun and Dan, who performed with The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, a Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock band of the late 1960s.":

This makes it sound as if these two sons were all the issue from this marriage or even all of Roy Harris's children, when in fact "the couple" had five children together and Roy Harris had seven children altogether. I don't mean to suggest that how many children Harris had (or how many wives--four) has anything to do with his "notability", but a misleading passage such as this can make one (rightfully) distrust the entire article, and, for that matter, all of Wikipedia. By all means, improve the content by correcting it and adding any pertinent information and references. With an encyclopedia that anyone can edit, there are likely to be errors. It's the nature of wikipedia. You can participate beneficially by correcting them as you find them. Best.4meter4 (talk) 18:49, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recordings of Harris Symphonies by Naxos Records.[edit]

This list has been assembled from the Roy Harris bio page on the Naxos Website and a catalog that was included with Naxos CD 8.559167 dated 2002 which listed upcoming releases.

  1. Symphonies No. 7 & 9 - (Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra/Theodore Kuchar) - 8.559050
  2. Symphonies No. 3 & 8 - (Unknown Orchestra/Conductor) - 8.559109 (Not released as of 2013)
  3. Symphonies No. 3 & 4 - (Colorado Symphony Orchestra & Chorus/Marin Alsop) - 8.559227
  4. Symphonies No. 5 & 6 - (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Marin Alsop) - 8.559609

As can be seen there may have been either a problem with the recording of 8.559109 or the release schedule, but further speculation is not possible.Graham1973 (talk) 03:20, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
