Should be called "pull starter".[edit]

It's called a "recoil starter" because it's a more sophisticated type of pull starter that automatically recoils itself. Thus, the description of the original type, which was just a rope wrapped around a fixed reel on the crankshaft, doesn't belong on this page at all, since it's NOT a "recoil" starter. It's just a pull starter. Both are types of pull starter, one more advanced than the other. Thus the page should be called Pull starter, not "recoil starter" (also because I've never heard anyone call it a "recoil starter": I've only ever heard the term "pull starter" until now. This is like calling the main page on transmissions "Automatic transmission", and then mentioning halfway down that "there is an old form of automatic transmission that had to be shifted and clutched manually". No, that's a manual transmission, not an automatic, and both of them belong in the category Transmission. An automatic is just a more complex modern variant on the initial idea. We wouldn't go around making "Automatic transmission" the name for all transmissions because of it. AnnaGoFast (talk) 02:35, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Recoil Starters don't work this way[edit]

I believe they use pawls which extend as the rope is pulled in such a way as to engage holes in the starter cup which in turn rotates the fly-wheel. They do not use a freewheel clutch. At least on lawn mowers. The best reference I can find is:
