Area of Romanesco[edit]

None of the local (more or less) "broad" dialects of the small and medium sized towns and villages bordering on Rome can be said to have so far ,altogether, disappeared ;young speakers of the original varieties can be found everywhere. However local dialects are used much less often than it was the case before the 1990s. Moreover, younger speakers tend to overlap the features of the local variety with those of neighboring towns and villages ,since they are often not brought up in it but have rather decided to pick it up at some stage of their youth. Many speakers ,both younger and elder, tend to use Romanesco in public places as well as in formal circumstances ,when the local variety would otherwise be their native language ,especially if non natives to the community are present (they don't want to be marked as yokels "burini").This often makes it difficult for non natives to acquire local varieties that therefore remain confined to members of the traditional local stock (plus a few others, often involved in farming). On the other hand Romanesco is gaining ground as a colloquial language much beyond the immediate surroundings of Rome to the point that in places like, for instance,Orvieto,Macerata,L'Aquila or Frosinone (in some cases even Pescara and beyond)it is the usual everyday spoken variety for large portions of the population. 2001:B07:6463:99D:E522:8714:D515:F952 (talk) 00:42, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
