From Christie's artist biography for an auction in 1997:

"Born in Edinburgh on the 22 October 1859 and educated at George Watson's College, his artistic qualities were acknowledged from an early age, and through the encouragement of his father, he attended the Board of Manufacturers' School of Design, and subsequently enrolled in life classes at the Royal Scottish Academy. Following an artist's local training, it was increasingly fashionable for students to attend one of the many continental studio academies. The accessibility of Europe, together with the commercial links between Scotland and Holland, and its common artistic links encouraged the young artist to be greatly influenced by the work of the Hague School. This subsequently led to regular trips within Europe including several trips to Italy, Southern France and Paris, where he later enrolled at the Academie Julien under Bourguereau. Upon the artist's return to Britain, he spent time in London working on a series of large works of classical subject, before returning to Edinburgh. Throughout Reid's early career, he exhibited many works imitating the popular neoclassical genre of Grecian and mythological theme, which characterised the popular tradition of High Victorian art as heralded by Alma-Tadema and Waterhouse. However, his interest in the classical subject never became detached from his admiration for the beauty of the Scottish landscape. The development of European realism towards the end of the century becomes evident in many of his landscapes including Thistledown (Lot 58), which is clearly influenced by the Glasgow School. He was a quiet, sensitive shy man, a friend of William Miller Frazer and Robert Noble and painted with them following his return from London. In 1916, he married Emily Smith and briefly settled in St. Ives, Huntingdonshire where he executed a large number of delightful paintings of the rural villages of the Home countries. Whether the subject was his beloved Scotland, the rugged slopes of Capri, or the flatlands of Holland, nature was always at the source of his art, and remained so until his death in 1945."
