Name correct?[edit]

Does anyone have a citation for an alternate spelling I've seen used, "Robert Dinwiddle?" Happypete (talk) 01:22, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's almost certainly a typo that has entered a secondary source somewhere. "Dinwiddie" is one of the many Scottish names that end in "-ie" (e.g. "Heggie", or the place name "Freuchie"); this is so consistent, as opposed to the same sound being spelled "-y" in English surnames, that that "-ie" marker can be used as a good guide to Scottish origin (the reverse is not true, as a spelling can more readily be changed to the English variant since more people expect that and end up writing it that way if they have never seen it spelled). Anyhow, the "-ie" ending is what we should expect from a Scottish surname, not an "-le" one at all. PMLawrence (talk) 09:18, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
