Career Details[edit]

@Canadagovernment "belongs in Wikinews and/or article about David Sproule as it's undue weight here" Mr. Nicholson, holds an extremely influential position within the Canadian government. News headlines come and go but an accurate summary of actions taken during his time as the Minister are very relevant, and should be easily view-able on this page. The idea that one act or another adds "undue weight" here is I believe irrelevant. Almost all his actions are of weight and significance in this position and should be documented to better portray an image of the man, his actions, and his career. Wiki is the only source that consolidates information that would otherwise fade into distant memory with the news headlines. The man is the sum of his actions and those should be easily view-able, referenced, and linked here. I also point out that this is not a political puff piece page and referenced point and counter point arguments to his actions I believe are extremely relevant and useful for users. @Rober-houdin, again I would argue that Canada's position on the Asbestos at the Rotterdam convention is significant and noteworthy. This was not a minor event, was well publicized in the international and domestic press and merits inclusion here. When the Department sends envoys to international conventions, the Canadian position when noteworthy is reflective of the Minister. Information is not simply excluded from a page because it adds "undo" weight??? He is in charge of the Department, Mr. Sproule is within that Department, and clearly operating under the guidance and instructions of the Mr. Nicholson who is in charge.Kurt Dundy (talk) 12:58, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It may belong on the Roterdam Convention page, the Canadian Environmental Policy Page the Sproule page (if it wasn't deleted because this is is the only noteworthy thing he has done, which means the article should be under either 'Roterdam Convention' or 'Canada's involvement in the Roterdam convention' etc). It is undue weight because it is about 1/5th of the article, and it isn't something Nicholson was directly involved in. If there was a source that said 'Sproule did so at the behest of Nicholson, who was the Cabinet minister pushing for this policy, because he really hates people who have mesothelioma, yadda yadda yadda' I can see why it would make sense to include it here. This paragraph could just as easily be on Stephen Harper , Department of Justice , Environment Canada, Peter Kent, Foreign Affairs Canada, John Baird, Treaties of Canada, etc.,etc.,etc. On a procedural note, the correct form when content you added is removed for cause, is to start a conversation on the talk page, then wait for a response, and consensus, before reverting. Having done a little cursory digging - Sproule was not working for Justice when he made the statement - he was heading up a foreign diplomatic delegation. The Justice Minister/AG does not set foreign policy, so this really has no place on Nicholson's page, unless the extracurricular or past actions of every Ministry employee that has made the news is worthy of inclusion. Did Nicholson hire Sproule? Did he choose him to head the delegation? Did he provide ANY direction to him? am doing additional digging to identify Sproule's chain of command when he was deployed to Rotterdam, and how Nicholson and the department he is in charge of, may or may not have been involved in advising the delegation. I would find it extremely surprising if the foundation of their policy decisions were not based on legal advice provided by the department (whether through seconded personnel or more directly), particularly on such a contentious issue. I also have serious doubts that any personnel seconded from the department to advise other government bodies do so without advising and getting approval from their own departmental chain of command (legal advice on foreign policy issues surely does not happen without Minster approval and knowledge???). When Health Canada advises the Government one way, and an international policy statement goes the exact opposite direction.... somebody has consulted the legal department to see if they can do it, and evaluate the legal risks. It would be naive I believe to assume otherwise. So though you say Nicholson and his department do not set foreign policy, I'm quite sure they advise the government, and therefor contribute directly to it.Kurt Dundy (talk) 18:42, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In order for this to belong on Rob Nicholson's page instead of the Ministry of Justice article, we'd need a source saying that Nicholson was directly responsible for either Canada's position, or sending and instructing Sproule.
