Support[edit]

2.Support — As newbie, I must agree here. Though well-educated and well-read, I had no idea what term "Rive Gauche" translated to mean, when I encountered it in a fiction book, and so looked it up. My search worked fine: I learned what I needed/wanted to learn (denotation & connotations), and to do so needed to start with the quoted phrase of French before I could possibly understand the geography, history and sociology of the term. tx [I'm hoping I did this correctly--first time ever wikiing] 2602:306:395A:A749:CD34:F23B:24CE:4B92 (talk) 12:03, 18 October 2012 (UTC) chuck larson altoona wi[reply]

Oppose[edit]

  1. Oppose - a left bank is just a left bank, but the Rive Gauche is the Rive Gauche. I think the normal English usage is to refer to it by the French name. -- Beardo 14:08, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Oppose - Agreed per above. Moreover, it is generally advisable to use the English name of something if the native language name would not be understood. This is certainly not the case here. Per Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Use_English_words: Convention: Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly recognized by readers than the English form. The Catalan and German pages both refer to "Rive Gauche" and this name is certainly understood by English users as well. - AKeen 14:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Oppose. I think it could be argued either way which is the more common English term, so either name would be acceptable, but this distinctive name requiring no disambiguation beats left bank as being easily recognised in terms of WP:NC, so it's the better choice. Similarly, stay with Rive Droite. Andrewa 02:26, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Oppose per all the comments above. This is a very recognizable term to English speakers. It does not need a disambiguation. EdJohnston 15:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Oppose, not only in English, but also in Italian, when you say rive gauche it's immediately clear what you're speaking of, and this without any further info given.--Aldux 13:30, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

are you sure ?[edit]

that the quartier latin is called this way because students were speaking in latin and not rather because there are the ruins of the roman town ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.57.181.143 (talk) 23:50, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
