Untitled[edit]

I do not understand something about this article. It says that General Hillier was born in 1955 and completed his (BSc in 1980 after enrolling in the CF at 18). This would make Hillier 20 years old on graduation, implying that he started his university studies at 16 (if he completed a standard 4 year program). Either Hillier is rather precocious or he did not complete a standard 4-year undergraduate degree. Does anyone know the details of his education?

This is not out of the question. Until the mid-80s the Newfoundland grade school system (in St. John's, anyway) only went up to grade 11; grade 12 was introduced in 1983 or 84. General Hillier's birthdate is unlisted but if he was an "early" child with respect to the school year (birthday between September and the end of December) he could have entered Memorial at age 16, and completed a 4-year degree program by age 20.Vulcan's Forge 03:34, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gen Hillier was not part of NDHQ at the time of the Ice Storm. He actually was the Commander of 2 CMBG based in Petawawa, in the rank of Brigidier General.

It is possible. A friend of mine entered the Naval Reserve at 16 years old as a Naval Cadet, the same year he was accepetd to university.

Fact: CDS Hillier is left handed.

Needs cites[edit]

I've just thrown a bunch of fact tags in this article. I don't doubt that anything in here is true, but it really needs some in-text citations, particluarly for some of the statements about how Gen. Hillier is generally percieved and quotes attributed to him. This is a biography of a living person: everything needs to be sourced! Stevecudmore (talk) 19:43, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Project Hero[edit]

Project Hero is not administered by the government of Canada, the individual universities choose their contributions and offer it of their own accord. They only contact VAC for verification of the student's status. Just thought I should clarify the facts. 199.43.148.227 (talk) 19:29, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Decade of Darkness[edit]

A user deleted the entry on Hillier's comments on the decade of darkness. They are relevant both in the criticism it received and in the General's description of the treatment of the military. If it doesn't belong on the Canadian Forces or Liberal Party of Canada pages, it certainly belongs on Hillier's own page. JOttawa16 (talk) 22:19, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple discussions have deemed decade of darkness to be too POV to include on Wikipedia. Please just drop the stick and back slowly away from the horse carcass. --JDDJS (talk) 23:11, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since when has it ever been determined that some facts are not good enough for inclusion on Wikipedia? The only discussions I've been a part of are whether the decade of darkness deserves its own page or whether it belongs on Jean Chretien's Wiki page. This was Hillier's quote about his department's experience in the 1990s. Why is his account being discredited?JOttawa16 (talk) 18:32, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We don't include everything someone says in their article. It's a trivia piece and very POV. JDDJS (talk) 21:46, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. It was clearly a major part of Hillier's career that he writes about in his autobiography. The Liberal government's substantial underfunding of the Canadian Forces shaped Hillier's leadership viewpoint; in fact, he only agreed to take the job of CDS if the Liberal government made him certain guarantees. This fits into his quote upon being sworn in that "you can't give our men and women too much, but you can give them too little. Remember them in your budgets." Apparently, this quote is relevant enough, but Hillier's view on the decade of darkness isn't?JOttawa16 (talk) 14:08, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is POV. If other editors agree with you, then I will not object to it, but as of now, it's just you continuously trying to add a POV statement to Wikipedia. JDDJS (talk) 14:35, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
