The New Rhetoric[edit]

Can anyone with knowledge of philosophy or rhetoric examine the language under The New Rhetoric? It seems to be more of sections from a college term paper than a discussion of Richard McKeon. Nightkey (talk) 19:25, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This sentence is notably obscure (one might almost say meaningless):

Mckeon deemed a very forceful rhetorical strategy capable of avoiding relativism as with a very forceful rhetorical strategy a solidarity is gained as people are supposedly unified via a forceful rhetoric

McKeon's scientific education?[edit]

It is my understanding that McKeon did his undergraduate degree in engineering, and that this resulted in his having a grasp of science and technology that was unusual for a humanist. One of the books edited by his widow speaks to the scientifically literate McKeon as revealed in some of his university lectures transcribed from tape recordings. Can anyone substantiate what I write here?

He did not wear this aspect of his background on his sleeve. But it explains why his close interest in Aristotle's scientific writings and occasional forays into the philosophy of science. However, this scientifically and mathematically literate McKeon did not much impress his Chicago colleague Rudolf Carnap, who had a deep understanding of math and physics and had studied under Frege (Source: Carnap's autobiographical essay in the Schilpp volume devoted to Carnap.)111.69.250.182 (talk) 22:14, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
