What is "racking a breaker"?[edit]

What is "racking a breaker"? It's semi-obvious (plugging or unplugging a large rack-mounted breaker, usually by turning a very long bolt), but no one actually defines it, at least not on Wikipedia. A876 (talk) 17:55, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why so dangerous?[edit]

Why is "racking a breaker" so dangerous, that it is safer to do it remotely? (USA averages something like four flash-arc accidents per day, approximately one per day of which kills someone.) Obviously they do it "live" sometimes, to avoid interrupting other services. But the breaker is open, so there should be no short circuit to start up the arc. What actually goes wrong??
