'Red Deer/Lethbridge is Alberta's third largest city' yet again.[edit]

This is a mess. Editors have been going back and forth on this and changing parts of lines without ensuring that everything is consistent. Refs in the article give us:

Not in the article as far as I know is the AB government's 2019 population report https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/daab9fce-c2f6-49d1-a433-375b2b7aee24/resource/61cd908d-e2b9-4837-939b-533848d723b9/download/2019_mapl_web.pdf. The population numbers are the same as in the cited media reports for the 2019 municipal census. So, per the 2016 federal or municipal census, Red Deer was larger. Per the 2019 municipal census Lethbrrdge was larger.

I'm simply going to rewrite the lead lead to say that Red Deer was the third largest Alberta city as of the 2016 Federal census, but that it had fallen to fourth largest (after Lethbridge) as of the 2019 municipal census. Meters (talk) 04:02, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed the same and I don't really sweat this. For insight on what is truly going on here, review this tweet and expand it to review the full thread. In all truthfulness, Red Deer is and continues to be the third largest city in Alberta and will continue to do so only when Lethbridge surpasses Red Deer again in a federal census, or when Lethbridge stops counting its non-permanent student residents. Perhaps simply remove mention of each city's population rank in the leads of both articles. Hwy43 (talk) 04:22, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've just copyedited your revision for even greater accuracy, but honestly I'd like to see ", and Alberta's third most populous city, after Calgary and Edmonton.[3] According to 2019 municipal censuses Red Deer's population had been slightly surpassed by that of Lethbridge, making Red Deer the fourth largest city by population in the province" simply struck, leaving it to simply read as "With a recorded population of 100,418 in the Canada 2016 census, Red Deer became the third Alberta city to surpass 100,000 people."

Then, at Lethbridge, re-write the lead to say "With a recorded population of 101,482 in it 2019 municipal census, Lethbridge became the fourth Alberta city to surpass 100,000 people." Both leads are factually correct, and no ranks in either – done! Hwy43 (talk) 04:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yup. No problems if you want to change what I wrote. I'm just tired of seeing the back and forth and was trying to put up a compromise that would satisfy both sides..Basically, we have two large cities (Calgary, followed by Edmonton) in the one million range, and then Red Deer and Lethbridge in a virtual tie at about 100 thousand.each.
